This was an interesting story that I had heard about previously but didn't know the explicit details of. Australian crime is always particularly fascinating to me, and this story gripped me even more as it takes place in my home town, with students who attended the same uni as me. The structure of the story made the narrative feel overly repetitive which I felt really detracted from the shocking details of the crime that were revealed (time and time again). Garner's perspective and personal stake in the story however, was refreshing and added an interesting insight to the book, highlighting how each of us can be so hugely impacted by the actions of one individual.

I really enjoyed Garners’s deep dive into the murder of Jo Cinque. I found the case and the outcome fascinating - two ANU law students set up a dinner party to murder Cinque. In this book law meets drama meets psychology.

I’ve read this book twice, and just finished listening to Helen Garner reading the audiobook. Each time, it feels like a punch in the guts. Unlike most popular true crime I’ve read and seen lately, there is (by circumstance of the fact the perpetrators would not grant interviews) a real focus on the victim and his family, their experience of the messiness of the justice system, and the long term impacts of grief on their lives. I will never watch the movie.

The book itself was interesting to read, captivating, and thoughtful. I did not know about this case prior to reading, and I had to keep reminding myself it was about a real murder.

I hope this book brought some comfort to his family, as I for one have learnt about him as a person and can feel the loss he left. I won't be forgetting him any time soon.
