I delighted in the mayhem.

I mourned that Margarita -- the best and bravest character -- doesn't ever escape the role of Manic Pixie Dream Girl to a boring man-writer.

And I struggled to remember all those Russian names.

The Devil to the disciple Matthew:

"You no sooner appear on the roof than you produce an absurdity, and I'll tell you what it is -- it's your intonation. You uttered your words as if you don't acknowledge shadows, or evil either. Kindly consider the question: what would your good do if evil did not exist, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it? Shadows are cast by objects and people. Here is the shadow of my sword. Trees and living beings also have shadows. Do you want to skin the whole earth, tearing all the trees and living things off it, because of your fantasy of enjoying bare light?"

I found this “classic” to be a mixed bag. Either an allegory of the Soviet Union and an expression of the absurdity of living there, or possibly I just didn’t understand it at all. The story was marginally more entertaining than just being mediocre but wasn’t nearly as stellar as I was anticipating going into it. Perhaps too complex for the level of intellectual work I was willing to put in at this time. I’ve read better. Was considering two stars, but with such a high rating from everyone else I’m just assuming I missed something and maybe it was more impressive than I thought. The curse of the classics.

Bulgakov's surreal and satirical masterpiece is wonderfully, and woefully, obscure in its intermingling of biblical tales with a critique on the heavy use of censorship in Soviet Russia - "manuscripts don't burn"... well this one certainly didn't. The satanic cast are captivating in their reckless abandon, as are the characters who are driven to insanity by their mishaps, where the culprits always seem to mysteriously vanish.

The supernatural, fantastical elements, such as at the Ball, are beautiful to read - funny too - as Bulgakov obscures cold, hard reality in a world of shadows and tricksters. In debt to the great Russian writers, The Master and Margarita is a classic for the modern age of roads, trams, and telephones, of useless writers and unexplained happenings. A master-and margarita-piece, as it were.

I get that this is an important historical book that satirizes life under Stalin. However, it is a painful slog to get through, has way too many characters that contribute nothing of value to the plot, and never felt rewarding to engage with. Do not recommend.
