Bullet Review:

Not going to lie, this feels almost like a completely different story. I felt that Plutonian's backstory had been rewritten to shoehorn in Max Damage, a rather dull, stereotypical "Bad Boy with a Grudge". Gone are Qibit, Kaidan, Bette Noir and Gilgamos; we just abandoned the Survivor storyline we left off on the previous volume either because Waid didn't know how to end this series or he grew bored with what he had.

People warned me that this series started strong and ended weak; they were right. I'll finish this off, because I've come this far and I am intrigued how it ends, but this was definitely not what I expected given the first few volumes.

In this volume, the origins of Plutonian are discussed, and Max Damage is brought in--in what seems to be little more than a promo for Incorruptible.

The origin story of the species that created Plutonian was interesting, but it was short lived in comparison to the rehashed "and he ended up in some terrible foster homes" plot. Then, in what can only be described as the most annoying rehash yet, Plutonian is yet again released from his imprisonment by someone who should know better.

The volume ends with the origin story of Max Damage.

I honestly have no idea what Waid is doing with this story anymore. It seems he didn't have an endgame planned, or decided to make a mini-series into an ongoing story--which it simply couldn't sustain.

A bit of a let-down considering the huge build-up from the previous issue, followed by a cross-over that wasn't particularly interesting if you didn't follow the other character's book. I'm hoping that this picks back up again for the finale.

We finally get an origin story of sorts and it's... mostly lacking. I wanted to love what they were doing, and it has some quick flashes of the origin story from The Boys, but the stakes feel weird and, perhaps more importantly, I didn't buy into the motivations of anyone involved here.

It all just kind of goes weird. I hate where this entire thing has gone.

Meh. We finally get the Plutonian's origin and (because I haven't read the companion series) meet another nemesis by the name of Max Damage whose origin is tied up in the Plutonian's past. This volume moves very slowly and focuses on the Plutonian and Max Damage, there is some messed up parenting in each of their backstories, with very different results on the characters, but I found myself unconvinced and uncompelled to find out what happens next.
