This was my first time reading Prince Ombra as an adult. It had been my favorite book of all time since around age 12 when I picked it up for the first time. Prince Ombra sparked my interest in world religions and mythology, it helped form many of my first spiritual thoughts on a personal level, and it asks interesting questions that I had never thought of before. One of my favorite aspects of the book is its style of omniscient narration. It brings the characters and the plot together in a unique way that I haven't seen anywhere else.

I'm still in love with it - this book is a treasure - but I see it from a different perspective now. I think that the underlying message could be a bit stronger and the characters a bit more three dimensional. I still have no idea if it's supposed to be a young adult book or a full fledged adult book. On the one hand, its themes are large and its plot sometimes disturbing. On the other hand the main characters are 7 and 8 years old. I would recommend it to anyone, child or adult, who is mature enough to feel magic and who is old enough to understand sexuality.

I will keep my 5 star rating based on how deeply this book affected me as a 12 year old, but my adult self would rate this as more of a 4 or 4.5.

A gem. An epic story told in small town America with some very clever threads woven through it.

this book is magic - that's a quote from one of it's reviewers and it has always stuck with me. the author blends together ancient stories and mythologies into this incredible tale about a young boy who must face the embodiment of 'evil.' i read it when i was about 13 and have never forgotten it.

Good book... if you get an earlier edition of it. The 2002 one has a bunch of edits that end up making the story confusing; it even keeps references to things that were completely cut, so you're left wondering, "Wait, what big secret was revealed? I didn't read any secret being revealed just now." Thank goodness for Pica, I say.

Interesting book, though slightly drawn out - classic battle between good and evil.

Okay so my uncle recommended this book and at first it was interesting, but the more I read, the more slow and boring it got. The build up did not lead to an exciting climax like I thought it would. Though, the epilogue was very sweet and did connect back to the beginning of the novel as well as tying some lose knots. I liked Bentley and Sally, but the other characters were just super bland. Even Bentley and Sally weren’t the most entertaining of mc’s. I wouldn't recommend it, personally. The writing style was a lot of telling, no showing. Everything was stated and very straight forward. There was no flow in the writing.

I thought this book held a lot of promise and certainly had some interesting ideas, but it never quite came together for me. Some central questions never got answered and Bentley’s final battle with Ombra, while personally quite a challenge, didn’t quite seem epic enough, given the premise of the entire book. Dr. Kreistein and Willybill were the most interesting characters—Willybill was especially painted to be menacingly mysterious, but I always though he was mostly observing and maybe even protecting Bentley. Many of the individual scenes were very effective but, as I said, the whole book just didn’t seem to come together convincingly.
