I am a slut for YA trashy urban fantasy romance and I will not apologize for liking hot garbage.

I am just a girl!

This is kind of a complicated book to explain, so I'll do my best. Essentially, Alex is 17 years old and has been on the run from the Covenant with her mother for the past three years. In this world, there are pure-bloods, who are direct descendants of the Greek Gods, but when they fool around with a human, there are half-bloods, which is what Alex is. Half-bloods can see the elemental magic that Daimons (this world's villains) use that humans and Pures cannot see. Thus, the Covenant is a school where half-bloods are required to train to fulfill their duties of being daimon killers.

Alex has missed out on three years of this, and instead of becoming the half-blood equivalent of a slave, Aiden, the man who saved her and an excellent Sentinel pure-blood, offers to train her over the course of the summer and if she reaches the level of training she should be at, she is allowed to stay in the Covenant. The harder they train, the more Alex longs for Aiden, but half-bloods and pure-bloods are strictly forbidden and a relationship like that can ruin lives.

A lot of reviewers say this is a Vampire Academy series rip-off, but I can't confirm that considering I've only watched the movie, but this is very similar to that. I'd compare this book to Camp Half-Blood from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and the training, romance, and boarding school vibes of the Vampire Academy movie (and presumably the series).

I can't tell you why I gave this five stars, but I had a really good time. I loved the plot and the loved the forbidden romance. I'm a sucker for that stuff, okay? Aiden is a really good character even though she's 17 and he's 20, but I am going to turn a blind eye (don't cancel me) because 2011 was a rough time. Caleb is also a really great best friend that I wish we explored more. I almost wish that the prequel, Daimon followed her life before she left the Covenant and then the beginning of this book included what the prequel did.

I cannot wait for book two! I'm really excited to see where this series is headed, specifically with the Seth and Aiden storylines because WHAT IS GOIN' ON?

3+ как се продължава поредица, в която не харесваш the main love interest. And it's not him, it's the whole concept of "first and endgame". FML

In a world where Pure Bloods ruled, half bloods were considered dispensable, and Daimons lurked the shadows waiting to drain the aether out of them, that was the kind of things Alex had to deal with especially when she found herself back in the Covenant. With Greek mythology elements sprinkled throughout this story, it tackled the issues that Alex found herself immersed in all over again, but also faced with new obstacles she had to overcome. With Jennifer L Armentrout’s writing, she brought Alex’s world to life that had me hooked from the beginning even in the novella before this one. Alex was headstrong, stubborn, and did things how she wanted…in other words, she was a bit of a troublemaker at times. Needless to say, this new book was the start of a new obsession in which I was immersed in Alex’s world and all things pertaining to Gods, powers, and Daimons that I was fascinated to learn more about.

Being back in the Covenant was a strange homecoming for Alex. Between the tragic loss of her mom, to fighting off Daimons, now Alex was back in the Covenant, and she had a lot to catch up on. Seeing Alex back in the Covenant gave me the chance to see a bit more of what the dynamics were like within the school, but also getting to meet people Alex knew as well. People like, Caleb, Alex’s best friend stuck me as the fun, mischievous type of person who usually got into all kinds of trouble with Alex. I was glad to see Alex back with some friends she knew, but I was also worried about her. Without a doubt, Alex had the potential to become a greater fighter. Sure, Alex knew how to fight, but when it came to the fighting techniques and lessons learned within the Covenant, unfortunately my sassy, fierce friend was behind all her other peers. On the bright side, Alex had an instructor of sorts to help with her training, ahem, a certain SOMEBODY SHE HAD A CRUSH ON by the name of AIDEN ST.DELPHI!!!!

This story kept getting better with each chapter! Omg! Obviously this first book was setting the stage for all the things Alex would have to face as well as meeting other characters. Aiden was an interesting character who I initially assumed would be the grumpy type, but he was more of the silent, serious, deadly kind instead. Aiden was also patient with Alex which surprised me, but that didn’t deter him from laying down the law on Alex when she wouldn’t listen. Aside from Aiden, the more I learned about Alex, the more I was curious about what was happening especially when it came to her.

Omg! The way this book just evolved into a slew of new discoveries when it came to Alex was intriguing to say the least. While the truth about what Alex was and essentially what she was destined for was revealed, I couldn’t help but feel awed and also a bit worried for her. Alex definitely didn’t have the easiest time being back in the Covenant, but when things came to light about her mom, the ever changing situation with the Daimons, and SURPRISE ALEX BEING THE NEXT APOLLYON! (Sigh) my goodness, Alex couldn’t catch a break! There was a lot going on, but it didn’t feel overwhelming which was great for me, and left me feel fully immersed in the story. The fact that Alex was faced with a set of new circumstances changed her entire life, but at least she had AIDEN IN HER CORNER AS SUPPORT….also a little bit of romance development between the two!

This being the first book in the series, it was filled with action, training sequences, strong, sassy, and stubborn moments from Alex and the budding romance building between her and Aiden. I think as the series continues, more of the Greek mythology elements will play an even bigger role which I’m excited to see, as well as Seth’s mysterious (The First Apollyon) connection to Alex. This was just the beginning to Alex’s story, and I’m looking forward to see how her story will change. Alex and Aiden’s romance had little glimpse here and there throughout this book, but alas, with Alex being a half blood and Aiden being a pure blood, it was forbidden and their relationship could never happen…for now. I think if you like stories with Greek mythology mixed into storylines as well as action, plot twists, fantasy elements mixed into a contemporary story, you’ll like this book. Also, definitely loved the addition of the novella and the bonus chapters included in this book, they were a little treat for me to read.

I have to say that this book really took me by surprise. I never really know what to expect from books like this anymore - sometimes I love them, sometimes I hate them. Honestly, if I was going to rate this like I was some kind of real reviewer, I'd probably have to rate it lower, but as a reader I completely enjoyed it (is "enjoyed" really the right word?). Here are the reasons I loved it:

Alex is kick-ass. She's a bit of a whiner, and a little bit of a brat, but I kind of like that about her. I liked that she was like a normal human being (even if she's not exactly human), because I get sick of characters that are in the "real world" and act completely weird. She seemed like any normal teenager. But, then, her bravery seemed believable. A lot of the time, I feel like characters act braver than they have any right to act in a story - they do or say things that are completely out of character. But Alex has this deep seated strength that comes out when she's in precarious situations. I loved that about her.

Aiden is hot. Can't pretend like I didn't think he was. The romance was nice - I liked that it was kind of simple - not so mushy that I wanted to puke. And I guess it was plausible...in a way. That would be where I would have my main issue - the relationship between Aiden and Alex, but, whatever, I liked it.

Seth was a jerk, but I have a feeling he'll endear himself to me in the next couple of books (I see this stuff coming a mile away these days).

Oh, and let me just say, I LOVED Caleb. I love it when there are people in the story that are amazing all on their own - a secondary character that has been thoughtfully and artistically created. Caleb had depth that you rarely see outside of the main character or the romantic interest. And this story needed him. His relationship with Alex shows that she has loyalty not only to the boy she loves but to the boy that is her friend. And his loyalty to her - man, I wish I had a friend like him.

We'll have to see how things go in the next few books.

Reread: 23/08/2020 - the ending was so sad. But that was so sweet that she did that. I really liked reading Alex’s character and seeing her develop and grow. The part with her mother as a demon and Caleb that was almost hard to read but I’m glad that she got out of that. It gave me similarities between Vampire Academy but it was also it’s own story. I’m interested to see how it will be for Alex, Seth and Aiden. What will happen between them.

It was ok. I felt like it could've been better, but I guess the rest of the series might be good. The story just felt like it was missing something.
