Wertz is irreverent and self-consciously gross (lots of bodily fluids jokes)
I liked it! She also has an illustrated guide on tenement history in Brooklyn
Also features the phrase "Wertz it all up", and tbh any time you can use your own last name as a derogatory verb is a Good Time imo

what a lovely book! heartwarming, funny, realistic, honest. love that it depicts a non linear storyline of recovery and highlights the magic of friendships. i will be reading more of you, julia wertz!

Onmogelijke mensen. Door: Julia Wertz.
Wow, wat een boek. Niet enkel qua omvang (319 pagina’s) maar ook qua impact. Onmogelijke mensen werd vertaald en uitgegeven door uitgeverij Scratch en ik hoop van ganser harte dat ze nog meer van Julia haar werk in het Nederlands uitbrengen. Ik ben fan!
Bijna twee weken deed ik over deze geweldige graphic novel. Niet omdat het boek niet goed is maar wel net omdat het heel goed is, en heavy, dat ook. Wertz schrijft en tekent over haar verslaving aan alcohol, eenzaamheid, leven in barslechte omstandigheden, break ups maar ook over vriendschap, urban exploring, scheten en de comicwereld.
Qua dagboekachtige openheid en eerlijkheid doet ze me wat aan Lucy Knisley denken aan qua tekenstijl een beetje aan Alison Bechdel. Maar bovenal is ze zichzelf.
Onmogelijke mensen is moedig, aangrijpend, grappig, triest, feministisch, stoer, pijnlijk openhartig en ongemeen prachtig. Het verhaal, de illustraties en schrijfstijl zijn zo goed; diep onder de indruk!
Wij zijn momenteel op zoek naar een nieuwe sofa maar alles is zo duur en uiteindelijk is een sofa toch niet veel meer dan…. Wie het einde van deze zin (lees: grap) wil lezen moet Onmogelijke mensen lezen. Ik kom nog steeds niet bij als ik aan deze hilarische definitie denk!

Memoir is hard to pull off - this one has a focus and a structure but is not overly focused to where it excludes some funny everyday life stuff. I have to admit that I avoided Wertz's comics because it annoyed me that her avatar did not look like her, not even in a cartoony way. But after reading this, I get that she has a distorted self image so that makes sense. It's a very honest look at addiction and how it can be a really serious problem even if you're basically functional (supporting yourself) but not mentally or socially thriving, and how hard it is to build and maintain a support system and even believe that you need or deserve one.
