This barely grabbed a 3, and it's only because I'm generous to Finch since I like his art style (yeah, I know it's the "kewl dude" style, but whatever) so went easy on him as he was also the writer. The art, as usual, is pretty great. The story, however, is not that great. You don't get a sense that it was thought out beyond, "Ok, I want to draw this villain, so I'll have Batman interact with him/her for some reason... probably to get information or something." This leaves us with a pretty unfulfilling story with Finch's usually great art and depictions of some of Batman's cast of villains.

Bottom line: get this only if you want pretty pictures. Go read The Long Halloween or Year One if you want good storytelling.

I love the art in this book, David Finch with Jim Lee’s faithful duo of Scott Williams & Alex Sinclair. Which is the main reason I’m giving this book 3 stars. Unfortunately the writing left somethings by to be desired, the whole story felt disjointed & ending felt rushed with no real resolution. Characters were introduced without any clear explanation of why.

Can we tag the official description of the book with a spoiler alert? I thought this went too much into occult and other weirdness, and was too disjointed to really be all that satisfying. And while I generally liked the art, why did every single bad guy have such pointy teeth?

This was…almost good?

Really, this disappoints in pretty much every way. The story is confusing and poorly laid out. It sets Batman against a magical enemy, that still feels jarring to me. The missing woman is so colourless that it is difficult to care about her one way or another. And there is no differentiation between the female characters' designs, which is just lazy really.

I enjoy a supernatural aspect to Batman's stories once in awhile. And I thought this one was well-done - plus it's fun to see Batman to team up with The Demon Etrigan. Bonus: A couple of back-up stories, one of which is a possible future with Connor and Damian as an aging Superman and Batman talking about their forebears.

Woooow, I had no idea of these villains and demon creatures. How cool is Gotham universe!
I always want to know more about Batman's psyche and what Bruce Wayne did before he lost his parents. I had never heard of Dawn before.
Really a new refreshing adventure.
