The Japanese characters all come off a little racist and inappropriate. I really can’t figure out if Crichton likes or dislikes the Japanese but his characters are offensive and their weaponization of racism as a tool to take advantage of Americans is insane!

I read Rising Sun years ago, on a Michael Crichton kick, and I remember enjoying it. It's a very well-written murder mystery set over a very short period of time, with very little extraneous information. It's also full of racism against the Japanese.
