A little girl sees a bicycle in a shop window and does chores for a nice neighbor to earn the money. When she finally has earned enough, she goes to the shop to buy the bicycle, but it's gone. Girl is bummed, but sees a tricycle that she buys for her little brother. Girl finds out the nice neighbor bought the bicycle as a thank-you gift for her.

The soft, pencil-y/chalk-y is wonderful. The only color is the green of the bicycle and the red of a toy airplane in the neighbor's garage. I hadn't read Mark Pett's book about a boy and an airplane, so when I saw the red plane, I was sure it would figure in to this story somehow. Nope. I had to go back and reread the whole thing to make sure I hadn't missed something. It was only when I read the author note on the flap and saw the other title that the red airplane made sense.

A girl and her younger brother are walking down the city streets when she spies a beautiful, green bicycle in a shop window. Her piggy bank doesn't hold enough money, so she seeks out opportunities to earn money, befriending a woman. Week after week, the girl earns money towards the bike, only to find it sold after she has earned enough to buy it. Saddened yet tenderhearted by nature, the girl sees that a tricycle in the shop window has caught her brother's eye. She buys the bike for her brother (wipe, wipe). On their way home, the kids pass the woman the girl has been working for and the woman has a surprise for the girl. It is easy to guess the surprise.

This is a wordless picture book with artwork similar to that of the Boy and the Airplane by the same author.

A little girl sees a bicycle in the window of a toy shop, and rushes home to count her money. She doesn't have enough to buy it, so she knocks on doors, hoping to do yardwork for them to make some money. Everyone says no except for one elderly woman. The girl helps the woman through many seasons until she finally has enough money - but when she goes to buy the bike, it's gone. The ending of this book is heartwarming and perfect. This was one of my favorite wordless picture books.

I loved this one even more than The Boy and the Airplane. It's amazing how much emotion can be conveyed with no words at all. I especially love that the airplane even makes a cameo appearance in this story.
