The Boy Who Lost Fairyland by Catherynne M. Valente

Read a more in depth review on my blog!

I started reading this series three years ago and read the first three books, now I'm finally finishing it! The thing I love most about this series is Valente's writing style, it is reminiscent of classics like Alice in Wonderland where a lot of descriptors are used.

This story follows new characters Hawthorn/Thomas and Tamburlaine, changelings who were plucked from Fairyland and grew up in the human world. Even though this was a detour from our main character September's story, I really liked this addition to the narrative.

Though hesitant about a new MC, I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Unlike its sprawling predecessors, it offered a focused and heartfelt narrative about changelings—but not from the usual human perspective.
Seeing things through the fairies' eyes, especially as someone who works with neurodivergent children, was a breath of fresh air. My heart ached for them, and I truly hope this streamlined novel leads to a satisfying series conclusion. While it feels like only half the story, it's a compelling half!

I had held off on reading this one for over a year because I loved the first 3 and didn't want the series to end. But now that the 5th book (which I ordered last July) has arrived, I plowed through this one. Even that verb shows how I felt about this one. This is the first Fairyland book I've given less than five stars to and unfortunately I think the work suffered in comparison to the rest of the series. There was not as much joy in this book and I felt like the wording and language, which had been whimsical and endearing in the first 3, felt forced and grated a bit on me in this one. Sad to say. I'm going to take a break in between this one and the final one so that hopefully this series can maintain it's place on my favorites shelf.

Hawthorn is a great character, and so is his wombat!

Good. Had me confused as I thought I was following September, but instead the MC was a troll. All is well in the end and I look forward to the next.

I continue to be completely charmed by the Fairyland books. While this one is almost entirely September-free (she does return near the end), I didn't mind at all, because the two new characters we're introduced to are loads of fun. Neither of them fit in their world, mostly because they aren't FROM the world they're living in. The ending is basically a set up for book five of the series, but up until that point I loved getting to know Hawthorn, Tamburlaine, Scratch, and Blunderbuss, and hope we see more of them in the final installment!
