To be fair, I hate series that shift the focus to new characters and then expect us to care just as much about these interlopers as the protagonists we've been following since the beginning. Valente's prose is in as fine form as always, but the extended treatment of the human world, the lack of September, and the problematic implications about families of birth versus families of choice sapped my enjoyment.
