Five one shots loosely tied to the much larger Spider-Verse run. Gwen's great, as always, and I was super excited to see Peni since she wasn't in the actual arc and I loved her in the movie. (Which shares absolutely zero plot points with this comic run; don't look for dad bods.)

Spider-Man Noir was fine, he's fine. Doesn't really excite me, but there was nothing wrong with it except the Inheritors are not at all explained. If I had read this before Spider-Verse, I would be 1000% lost.

Gwen - Aces but also VERY heavily reminds me of Batgirl and Jim. Like I'm pretty sure I've read that scene line for line before.

Aaron Aikman - Interesting story, I was feeling it. Not my favorite art. I like an ambiguous ending.

Parton Parnell - NO. No no no no no no no no no.

No.

Fuck this story, fuck Marvel, fuck everything and everyone and NO FUCK NO

Peni - <33 I liked the take on Daredevil too, but I wish it was a bit longer and we got to see some more of Peni's actual fighting. The one detailed battle she's immediately taken out and the suit and the spider do the job.

Fun read, except for #3 and #4. Seriously though, what in the actual hell was #4 and who greenlighted it? Lowest quality writing and premise I've come across in Marvel.

Hard to rate as a TPB because of how much that one sucked and how lukewarm #3 was. Noir, Gwen, and Peni were awesome though.

Hard to rate bevause every issue is so different. I didn't like the last two comics and even though I liked the 2nd and 3rd ones they're too short to really enjoy them. Would have loved to read a little bit more about Spider-Gwen and Aaron Aikman. The first comic fell somewhere in between.

The Gwen Stacy cover is a bit misleading. This is the story of five alternate universe Spider-people.

The first, Spider-man Noir, is the closest to the canon Spider-man story, but with small changes like MJ being a soldier for five years. 3/5

The second story is Spider-Gwen. I enjoyed the more playful artwork but the story seems restricted in that the roles are reversed with Gwen being bitten and Peter dying and then Gwen carrying the guilt for his death. 3.54/5 because artwork.

The third story is about Aaron Aikman, who is basically adult Peter Parker with robotic enhancements to his suit. I enjoyed the story, so 3.5/5

The fourth story is about Patton Parnel, the anti-Peter Parker. He's an orphan, lives with his abusive uncle Ted, is a peeping Tom with the hots for his neighbor, Sarah Jane. Basically what Peter Parker would be like as a sociopathic kid with superpowers. This was probably the most interesting story for me because of how drastically different it is to canon. 4/5

The fifth story confused me because it's radically different from any of the other Spider-people and it's never really quite explained what's going on. Peni Parker is a very young girl who must take over her dead father's job as some sort of Robocop type enforcer. It's never very clear what SP//dr does or why the suits are genetically limited, but there it is. 2.5/5 for this one because I didn't really get it.

Most of this I didn't understand. What I did understand seemed stupid and gross. How did all this bland Spider-Verse stuff eventually lead to a really awesome movie?

Patton Parnel will haunt me forever... definitely not my favourite Spider-Man comic.

Not exactly origin stories but 5 different Spiders and intros into their worlds as the Spiders are recruiting to stand against Morlun. Spider-Noir, Penni Parker, Adam Aikman and Spider-Gwen. My honest favorite was the horror version with Uncle Ted and Patton. Lots of fun although the main point seems to be introducing the audience to Morlun and how dangerous he is.

I also didn't realize this was the introduction of Spider-Gwen, outside of the covers they did. Also, I know movies often borrow from comics but it was weird to see Spider-ham popping in to say it can get weird.

Lots of fun, onwards to the main Spider-verse event.

Review of Edge of Spider-Verse and Spider-Verse event

The Edge of Spider-Verse title brings together five Spiders from other dimensions and lays the foundation for them being pulled together in the cosmic event, Spider-Verse. We start with Spider-Noir, where Spider-Man fights crime in the 1930s. He is challenged by the magician Mysterio, who wants Spider-Man’s blood for the Anansi, the God of Spiders. Next, we travel to another realm where Gwen Stacy was bitten instead of Peter. Gwen is the prime suspect in the death of Peter Parker, and her father is leading the investigation! Next, we find ourselves with Aaron Aikman who has developed a mechanized spider-suit to compliment his powers. Then, we’re off to a world where an obsessive Peter is bitten by a spider and becomes a hellish version of the superhero we know and love. The last story is SP//dr, a symbiotic mecha warrior with a sentient spider and young girl.
