- - -
- Te iubesc foarte mult.. dar undeva, lipseste ceva.
- Unde? intreba ea privindu-l.
-O, inauntru, in mine.

Didn’t think I was going to be a big fan of naturalism, but this demolished any expectations I had. D.H Lawrence wins an award from me: 500 pages long and I couldn’t care less about the characters. Looking back, I wonder why I didn’t dnf this book: Most of the time it was soo boring. It really was 500 pages of daily life, while the writing wasn’t even particularly poetic or beautiful in any way, but terribly bland.

I can appreciate it as a semi-autobiographical novel, D.H reflecting on the relationship he had to his mother etc etc - but for anyone else but the author himself to read that? Kind of a waste of time to be honest…(and precious trees)

Every single one of these characters is soo emotionally unstable. Ok, I guess that’s pretty realistic. But you can’t just write “As he took her in his arms and held her tight, he felt his strong love for her suddenly.” And LITERALLY five lines later: “He looked at her and I realised how much he despised her.”(or smth like that) Like what? If your characters go through such tremendous inner turmoil, you need to do a better job at making me feel with them, or at least for me to understand them. But the writing was just way to “minimalistic” to do that.
Miriam was the only character who was somewhat likeable to me throughout. But never have I ever read the word “hate” so often in a novel. Did anyone count? I just had to roll my eyes at that word at some point. Something or someone can distress or vex you without you needing to “hate” them immediately, no? Glad I read this book in that sense: It was a reminder how strong a word “hate” is and that we should use it less often.
But what was even more annoying: zero character development. The story starts with major mummy issues, the story ends with major mummy issues. I was rather left thinking: What were the last 500 pages for, actually? If anything, Paul was ruined in the end - so technically there’s “negative/passive character development”? (Don’t worry that’s not a spoiler, you see it all coming anyway)

I know my rant really sounds like a one star review, but I’ll have to give this book 2 stars since there had to be sOmE kInD of “magic” pulling me towards it - I mean I didn’t dnf it. But then again: Maybe I just kept reading because I wanted to feel justified in the negative review I knew I was going to write from the beginning 😂

All in all I just wish D.H Lawrence would’ve written in his diary (and seen a therapist) instead of publishing this.

It was a really good read. I really liked the characters, the plot and the overall atmosphere of the whole story world. I was actually invested in the characters, their lives and what might happen next.

Just want to discuss the relationship between Mrs Morel and Paul. When she was pregnant and even when Paul was a toddler, Mrs Morel didn't want him and wished he would die, yet due to his sickly nature she was forced to pay more attention to him than to William and Annie. That attention later turned to Paul being almost independent in my eyes. He didn't want to marry or more precisely, he said he could never love any woman when his mother is still alive, and even when his mother passed away, he still couldn't commit to Clara and Miriam, he even considered suicide just to be with his mother. Their relationship was odd to me, it almost seemed like he wished to marry his mom.

What also bothered me was how easily both Clara and Miriam lost their feminist side for Paul. Clara was a known ''men-hater'' and Miriam was bothered with her position in her family since she was overlooked for being a girl. Yet, when Paul said some questionable stuff, they were angry but they never responded like they did at first.

It's been a while since I've read this one...But I vaguely remember being disillusioned by it. A very depressing, realist novel that raises some very important points about the working class that still resonate today.

It was a little boring at times and women are often treated very harshly throughout. I love D H Lawrence's honesty, but it was somewhat brutal.

Has stuck with me since, so worth a read if you've got a little while.
