A bit of second book syndrome here. Not as good as Eragon. There were times when the writing dragged a bit. Paolini is serious about his world building and he does such a great job at building a complex and unique world but there were times it definitely got repetitive. Some things were over explained. And some things were over done. Like I get Eragon has a massive crush on Arya but by the third time he approached her and apologized to her for a second time I was over it. lol.

That being said I am enjoying rereading this series and am looking forward to Brisingr

Please note: I took a break partway through this book because I'd gotten acutely bored (and coursework got overwhelming).
The characters are compelling, and Paolini's revelation as to why the elves (and riders) don't eat meat (unless absolutely necessary) was well-written, portraying Eragon's internal dilemma up to the realization. While Eragon's training (which was about 1/3 of the book, I think...) was well thought-through, it was a little dull at times, focusing on explaing the mechanisms of magic and histories.

This one was a lot slower. Eragons. chapters were a bit monotonous, i liked them but they dragged. The writing feels almost logical, as if the author sat down and logicallyy planned the purpose behind each scene

Eragon was better, but this was not bad. I enjoyed being able to see things from Roran’s perspective, and having Ellesmera described and the characters that live within it interesting.
Gripes:
Too much exposition
Eragon having his “disability”/back healed by the spirits of dragons. I wanted to see how he would endure and learn to live with and around it.
Murtagh and Eragon being brothers is yawningly predictable. Also idk what it is, maybe the way it’s written, but I just know that Morzan won’t actually be Eragon’s father and that Murtagh is lying.

3rd read: 14-25 September 2022

i love you character who’s trying to do better but cannot outrun your fate, i love you hope in spite of all proof of doom, i love you despaired attempts at making it right, i love you blind trust even as you know a knife in the back is awaiting, i love you love that doesn’t mean anything when faced with greater forces, i love you slow descend into madness at the unfairness of it all, i love you pure heart not strong enough to withstand tainting, i love you justified anger

2nd read: sometime in summer 2014
1st read: sometime in 2006, this is THE series of my childhood and the reason why i learnt to love books so dearly
