We were introduced to a lot of new characters in the Forgotten and the Shine Foundation, so I hope to see more of them one day. I loved all the history we got on the Forgotten in this book; they’ve been intriguingly hinted at throughout but this is the first in-depth look that we’ve been given. I find it fascinating how similar yet how different they are from the full-blooded Psy race; all due to different evolutionary development. I was particularly touched by the storyline of Jack and his son William, it was so heartbreaking! The Forgotten are beginning to develop strong powers and just like the Psy, some can’t control that power. This has them wondering if Silence might be an answer to their problems as well but this would go against everything that the Forgotten are founded on. I just wanted to hug William and make it all better. Instead, a certain wonderful Arrow got to take care of things.

It was interesting that we had a Psy character who was not under any Silence influence and a human/Forgotten character who was very much like the Psy in his demeanor and personality. Though Dev was a hard man in the beginning, he really came to love Katya and wanted to do anything he could to protect her. His devotion, particularly in the end, was so beautiful! I’m not a person that cries at books but I almost lost it there in the end.

Because of Dev’s role in the Shine Foundation and his ability to manipulate metal he doesn’t come across as very “human” per se. I would love to see a human love interest that is more human (whatever that means, lol) or maybe just softer. Devraj and our previous human love interest, Tally, have very hard lives that have shaped them into a particular mold. Maybe I’m just looking for a more innocent characterization to shake things up?

Updated 5/12/2023: my god, how bad of a mood was I in eight years ago to complain about that ending?

This could have been so good if Nalini Singh had actually had the balls it briefly seemed like she did.
