This didn't end up being what I expected, but I was definitely entertained by it. The story starts with George Hills, one of the only survivors of a shipwreck, who was saved by a mysterious woman. The thought of her haunts him for years, but at some point he begins to suspect the haunting is literal. And he's not far off the mark.

We get multiple perspectives, and they're all interesting in different ways. I think I enjoyed the creature's chapters the most; that is what makes this book scifi, and I loved seeing different worlds through its eyes, even though we only get glimpses of them. I think this book offers a good portrayal of survivor's guilt, which we see George (and, to some extent, the creature) suffering from, and how that extends to other people in their lives. The one character whose purpose within the larger context I never really understood was Bea. I enjoyed her chapters, but she feels disconnected from the rest of the story.
