3. This book tells the amazing story of Mary Walker. She was an independent, ground breaking woman. She wore pants are the Civil War, when only men could wear pants. She served in the Civil War as a doctor. She fought for women's rights. She was the only woman to earn the Medal of Honor.
4. This book is an inspirational story for any young girl. The amazing feats of Mary Walker are expressed in easy to understand language, with colorful pictures. Mary Walker shows anyone they can follow their heart and achieve anything they put their minds to.
5. This book is great for a read aloud about inspirational people or women. It is also good for a social studies lesson about women, or the Civil War.

A somewhat slight look at the life of Mary Walker, a female physician who served in the Union army during the Civil War. A note at the back of the book does something to provide additional info (dates, etc.), but no sources are cited. Pair this book with LOUISA MAY'S BATTLE for more on women in the Civil War. Skip it and pick up WHO SAYS WOMEN CAN'T BE DOCTORS? by Tanya Lee Stone if you're looking for information about early female physicians.

Matter-of-factly written picture book about the Civil War era woman who became a doctor, but only after two years of volunteering as a nurse in the War led to her commission as an official Army surgeon. She was captured, was a prisoner of war for a few months; became first woman to receive Medal of Honor. Campaigned for "equal dress for women" and the right to vote. Nice author's note gives full story of her life, born and lived in Oswego NY (I got to tour her house once when I visited a friend there). But no sources or bibliography included. Illustrations are so-so, realistic full color pastels.

This is an important story about Mary Walker, who accomplished many firsts and was a women ahead of her time. This book will compliment my Civil War unit well.

A lesser-known woman who challenged many social norms of her day.
