The prose is beautiful while dealing with some truly abysmally ugly subject matter. Unfortunately I spent the whole novel distracted by McCarthy's signature lack of quotation marks, which always leaves me annoyed to the point of resenting the book for that while reading it, making for a bad reading experience of otherwise masterful writing.

One of the finest weirdos ever penned in human history. Lester Ballard is a one in a million character whose ludicrousness is bordering on unbelieveable but McCarthy treads that line masterfully

Quick read and a nearly impossible one to grade. Better than just okay, but so over-the-top disturbing that it’d be hard to call it a 4 or 5 star “good” read. Follows the actions of a psychopathic hillbilly serial killer as he collects his female victims and engages in cross-dressing and necrophilia. Yeah, so there was that.
