I won a copy of this book in a giveaway, which that alone was amazing because seriously..I NEVER WIN! haha

The other amazing thing is this story! It was such a nice breath of fresh air in so many ways.

1) Not having that immediate “omg I am instantly in love with this person I just locked eyes with”

2) A new way viewing angels vs demons. A lot of the time when I read a story involving them there is always some religious tie in with them. Which is fine, I mean I’m religious and I’m not opposed to that by any means. It was just refreshing for the story NOT to have a religious connection.

3) Bickering between characters makes the friendships feel more genuine to me as opposed to always getting along, always seeing eye to eye on everything, etc.

4) The story kept my mind occupied enough that I wasn’t trying to figure things out. I’m sure I’m not the only one who does that! My mind was drawn into the story and I was mentally watching it unfold without trying to look ahead and guess what was going to happen next.

If a book can do those things for me, I’m in it until the end!

This was also the first book I’ve read by this author! Pft! It’s like a won multiple giveaways! Win a book, find a story I totally loved and a brand new author to enjoy! Sign me up for all further books by Alicia Rades. I’m adding them all to my TBR list. I am anxiously waiting for book 2 to release! I’m very excited to see where the story is going!

This would be a fun, quick urban fantasy read for people who enjoy the subgenre. It gives the same enjoyment as a CW show. However, parts of it feels like a Wikipedia info dump about the setting and magic system. It is also obnoxiously short, without much story in a way that made me feel like this was clearly a marketing ploy to have people purchase or borrow multiple volumes (eg on a pay per borrow platform like Hoopla). It just bugs me when I feel like I read 1/3 of a book unnecessarily split into a trilogy. (Disclaimer: I obtained this book when it was a freebie from libro.fm)

I'm not writing a proper review in the format I usually do because I just can't be bothered.

I really tried hard to read this book but this book is sadly further proof to myself that YA is no longer suitable for me.

I've said this before but I'll say it again, why do YA authors make their female leads appear so weak? We get the usual spiel of they are super special sparkly heros but they rely on a male to help them up. Why? If she is so super duper why isn't she enough without the love interest? Fine have a side line for that but just always seems to be saving her, although once she sort of saved him. Sort of.

The story was slightly interesting and I was curious about the whole demons not called demons and angels not called angels, and the whole realm and magic etc but this was hard to read and I didn't find myself wanting to keep reading, there are better YA books that have a similar story lines.
