Seems to be two stories: one a documentary following the children left behind when their cult leaders pulls their parents away; the other a playful (?) list of the author's weird dreams.

My rating is down a bit because there's a lot of confusion in the layout/wording/whatever, both in the book and on the cover(s). Is the first story part 2 of something, even though the cover says Vol 1? Is the second story a list of a dog's dreams, as it literally SAYS it is, even though the actual story is by and about a human who appears to he the author? Why is the title Egg Cream when that has nothing to do with the work inside?? Etc etc etc etc. I just felt like I was always a bit behind, a bit confused, maybe missing something crucial.

The second story is fun and weird, though, and a nice light palette cleanser after the denser, darker, and much more intricate first story. That one literally starts with hundreds of cult members committing mass suicide. It then shifts focus to the children they left behind, interviewing them TV news style to layout the timeline and effects of their abandonment. Like a real news story, though, this summary feels incomplete, jumping between characters and events to address multiple histories. I was moderately intrigued, and at times even touched, as the characters reflected on what kept them living in the lawless shell of their high control religion, abandoned and anarchist, yet unable to move on.

4 stars for the Sacred Heart sequel stuff, but 2.5 for the rest of the 'zine. I love Suburbia's art but I didn't care for her random musings on her random dreams (or whatever it was).

I loved [b:Sacred Heart|24778945|Sacred Heart|Liz Suburbia|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1436729616s/24778945.jpg|44411301] when it came out & have been checking Suburbia's sosh meeds in anticipation of the sequel. Egg Cream breaks the fast with "Livin' In the Future", a time skip of 10 years from the original timeline which fills in all the missing details that Sacred Heart concealed. Why were the kids of Alexandria by themselves? What does Ben's stigmata mean? Who survived the storm? This issue of Egg Cream answers all those questions & gives readers more to consider. I spent a whole day not just reading the new comic but holding both books in my lap, flipping back & forth between the two, comparing faces & illustrations, returning to Alexandria's weird, familiar streets & Suburbia's beautiful distinctive art. Support local comics & artists!

Suburbia's follow up to Sacred Heart did not disappoint for me. I really loved Suburbia's additional comics in the back. Can't wait for more of these!

Now is the point at which I declare Liz Suburbia to be one of the best working cartoonists. This is also the point at which those who have already recognized this roll their eyes and tell me that I’m ridiculously late to this particular party. No matter. I’m just stoked to have stumbled my way in the door.

El Sub is way rad.

I was stunned by Cyanide Milkshake. Now I’m totally floored by what I’m reading in Egg Cream. LS isn’t simply influenced by Los Bros Hernández; Liz “El Sub” Suburbia just proved herself to be their long lost hermana!

In this one-woman anthology, we get the continued story of Sacred Heart (her first major book) as well as an incredible comic that does super-short riffs on dreams. Like the rest of her work, this comic expresses the full range of possible emotions when people are faced with the need to “just get by” and survive. It’s funny. It’s gut-wrenchingly tragic. It’s real. It’s ridiculous. This book feels like life as I know it.

And most remarkable of all, like the characters in Love & Rockets, Suburbia’s characters all look and act like me and the people I know and love. She gets it, just like Los Bros do.
