In conclusione: Magnifico!

Enjoyed the book thoroughly. As a reader I knew who the Count of Monte Cristo was, who were his “targets” and why did he target them. All of these were a mystery to the characters in the story. Still, I was engrossed in the different twists and turns encountered in the story while the characters unravel the mystery of the Count.

The story is clear example of times when the journey is more fruitful and interesting than the destinations. I sometimes had issues with the pacing of the narration as it slowed down a lot in a couple of places. Still, I would like to say that the end was worth the wait.

This was the first and probably only time I will read this beast of a classic. It has everything you expect from what you have heard and know about before diving in. Hope, love, betrayal, envy, jealousy, and of course, adventure, piracy, treasure-hunting, crime (both real and false), cruelty, self-entitlement, greed, social disgrace, distortion, and destruction, and of course, vengeance. I noticed throughout that there are tons of current phrases that were penned by Dumas that are still part of Western phraseology and culture; that was interesting to me. I loved the story and plot but it could have been more concise, albeit recognized that you definitely get the feel of theee decades of planning and execution for revenge. There were some tangents that there didn’t need to be there and there the heavy dialogue is repetitive and eventually exhausting. Overall, The writing and storytelling were fantastic. I do have to agree with some others that Dumas’ use of women characters is extremely limited and ill-rendered. The other character issue I thought seemed wrong were the streaks of luck for all evil-doers, too convenient of a device for leading the reader in my opinion. I think this story however is mostly timeless and deserving of its praise. The Count was a heartwarming antihero of multiple disguises. My main wish was that there would have been more mystery for the reader.
