DNF @ 81%

My rating isn’t based on how it’s poorly written because it isn’t! It’s more about the fact that if you haven’t read all the books, you’re bound to get a headache about all the people that would be introduced to you throughout the book.

The built-up between Nate and Evie is okay. It wasn’t something to be squealed about or like how you just wish and wish throughout the book that they get together. It’s calm and honestly, with the whole book focusing on a lot of things, it’s the most thing I liked about the book.

Then, we move on to the amount of things that they have to solve. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure if I read some more, everything will tie together but the way Kyla’s focusing on her work and then Evie’s focusing on hers, they both just mash together. While it should work because they’re best friends and partners, it somehow feels forced. If anything, I would have wished for Kyla to just have her own POV on the book.

Back to the characters being introduced—it honestly wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t for the fact that you can actually tell that you’re missing out on reading the other books when Evie described who each characters are and while I get it, it’s too vague to feel any sort of connection to any of the secondary characters.

There’s also her past. If the books for different characters are separated, and this is Evie’s time to shine, then why does it feel like I’m reading a side character? Like, her pasts are not openly discussed throughout the 81% portion of the book I’ve read except for “this happened” and some nightmares and then flashbacks.

The book in itself is interesting. That’s why I lasted 81%. I just got tired of all the characters being introduced and then giving me a bunch of vague information that I should have known.

Anyway, that’s why I give 2 stars.

In the mood for shapeshifter romance/fluff after KM Shea's awesome Gates of Myth and Power trilogy (I also reread bits of the Pack of Dawn and Destiny trilogy and it was great). Very unfortunately... This has too much obsessive controlling possessive I Am an Alpha Male behavior by the male lead, although the mystery and the story itself are engaging enough, and I really liked the heroine.

She was whiny and tedious sadly. Everyone was treating her with kid gloves?!
My expectations for this book were through the roof, my bad honestly as everyone knows the first rule of avoiding disappointment is to lower your expectations. Undecided if I want to continue on to the second book

It was hard for me to give this 3 stars - I wanted to give it more and less at the same time, so I settled with three.

I enjoy this world, and most of the characters. And the puzzle of this plot was fun, if a little overly convenient in how all the threads tied together.

So what was the problem?

I can't stand Evie.

I couldn't stand her in the main series, and I didn't like her much better in her spin off. She is just so fucking stupid and whiny. And a hypocrite. Her utter meltdown about not being told immediately that Nathaniel thinks she's his mate ... I just wanted to punch her in the boob. She's exhausting. She loves blaming everyone else for her life, and I pretty much hated how shitty she was to Danica (and as a special treat, we got to see her be shitty to Danica in this book too, yay). She is a spoiled princess with a tendency to freak out and run away. Is she really surprised people are hesitant to share information with her? Now she's walking around like some badass, because apparently a couple months of training puts her on par with all the supernatural badasses. /eyeroll

What's hilarious is she was puzzling out how to lie to Danica about the sword mission, and was even considering stealing Danica's invisibility artifact for the mission, but then she has a shrieking fit about people lying to her.

Looooooooool

It's also hilarious that everyone else knew she was Nathaniel's mate, not because they were told, but because if you aren't dumber than a box of hair it is freaking obvious by the way he acts around her. Vas watched them for like 3 minutes and said "oh, so it's like that, is it?" But Miss I'm-A-Badass-Investigator apparently needs a map, compass, and detailed directions to figure out the obvious.

She's The Worst. Which is a real bummer because Nathaniel is awesome - he deserves so much better.

I'm reading on, though, despite giving myself an eye roll migraine, because I want to read Kyra's book and this story feeds into / overlaps with it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 ✨

So my rating of this book is a little unfair, because I read it prior to the “Deal With Demons” series. The series are interconnected, but seemingly not required to read both?

However, to avoid feeling a little underwhelmed whenever past events are referenced, I highly recommend reading the other series.

In fact, I ended up searching the author’s profile to find the other series and binge read that before I continued on with this series.

So, with all of that in mind, I think if I had read Dani’s story first before reading this one, it would be closer to a 5 star, like a 4.75.

I seriously can not get enough of this author.. if this is your first book go back and read the first series. Knowing Evie's sister's story adds to the magic.

I love Evie and the independence she's striving even when she being stubborn and I want to shake her. And Nathaniel...yum my type of alpha. He protective of Evie while also giving the space she craves.

So hard to wait for next book and the possible stories of side characters.

Good enough to break my reading block. No spice though. Enjoyed the main character but definitely felt like I was starting midway in the series even though it was the first book for that character. There was lots of quickly thrown in backstory. I dig the alphahole Nathaniel though.
