Ava and Jules are still hurting over their recent breakup when they are sent on an adventure that is beyond anything they ever imagined. They are bored, disillusioned employees at a barely-disguised version of IKEA when a black hole into the multiverse opens from the Nihilist Bachelor showroom.

I know. whaaat?

This novella is a complete surprise. For some reason I was expecting a noir mystery. Instead it is sort of like a dark anti-capitalist Dr. Who episode that morphs into a deeply felt breakup story. Nothing is tied up with a bow at the end, but Ava has moved into a space of tender acceptance and openness to the future. Good read.

This was a decent read. I liked the concept of random wornholes appearing in a furniture store chain and management doing the bare minimum to deal with it. It's ridiculous, but it is wrong? Not really.

Though I can't decide if the protagonist's almost suffocating anxiety and unhappiness works with the ridiculous tone or against it. What I do know is that the few worlds with got to explore were very interesting. I do wish we'd gotten to know more about Ava because, close to the end, I realized that everything we know about her is in some way connected to her relationship with Jules. The book is too much about their breakup. Still, I wanna read the second one because I've heard it's better. We'll see, I guess.

The premise of this was absolutely amazing: a wormhole opens in an IKEA and two exes have to go through it and find a lost grandmother. Beyond that though it felt kinda average; I did love some of the universes they went to though and this line GOT ME "they had the stores of righteous rage that all retail employees collected."
