Beautifully told with a very clear voice. I want to believe that so much tragedy in one family is too much, but the light in this book makes it worth the dark.

There was a scene that gave me an uncomfortable impression about the dynamic between two siblings, so I looked up the trigger warnings which had not been mentioned in the recommendations of this book to me. After learning there is in fact a graphic depiction of incestuous rape, as well as a graphic description of animal abuse, I made the decision to DNF. This is not at all a commentary on the writing, as I began to enjoy the prose and style quite a bit and was looking forward to seeing the story of the family unfold. This was for my own mental safety.
Graphic: Child abuse, Incest, Rape, and Animal cruelty

I think getting punched in the face would hurt less than this.

What a beautiful story, very strong To Kill A Mockingbird vibes. The dad figure is like a Native American Atticus Finch, so wise and with such a beautiful soul.
Some parts are very hard to read as there's a fair bit of violence and tragedy, but it's necessary to the story and nothing is gratuitously told. The main character Betty, from whose eyes we see the world through is the most incredible, strong little girl and it feels a privilege to watch her grow through the pages. A strong 4.5 stars.

Don't know what to rate this. While the writing in parts was beautiful I don't think it warranted the amount of triggering events that happened in the book. By the end of it I just felt numb to it all and didn't find it as emotionally impactful as other people have
