At the risk of revealing myself to possible classmates using this platform: I fondly remember our lecturer's positive surprise that we all liked the book and found it funny.

This book is what happens when a poet, who is also a deeply political activist, tries to write a novel. There are passages (I read it in Polish), that are the height of Polish prose, hands down the best fragments of literature in Polish I've ever read.
There is also the political agenda of the book. While I embrace the vision of workers taking over, etc., the whole plot (and also execution of non-Paris storylines), are pretty weak.
