(Originally posted on IG)I got this as a freebie in my goodie bag from when I went to Women’s Prize Live in June (remember when there was something called a sun in the sky?)
This gave me Claire Keegan vibes: a short story about not a lot, yet still packed with a whole lot to unpick…
Cheri is ill and reflecting on her life as she reaches the inevitable end. Battling cancer, she focuses on her time as a child, through to being a mother and navigating the emotions that come with it from all sides.
Leaving 2 daughters behind, Cheri has chosen to go to the most lonely of places, to a sparse hotel room away from home as her oxygen supply dwindles away.
It definitely darkens at the end as the inevitable approaches and she drifts away, but I can see this would definitely relate to many not wanting to let go of loved ones in their final moments, especially where they could be a choice to have just a little more time together.
A good read, but not quite my jam.
