Wow! So many things to love about this cozy mystery! First, I loved the characters! Jolene has had a hard life, and her current attitude and actions totally make sense. She can be a bit grungy and rude to Daisy, but her heart is in the right place and she does her best! Peter is awesome! I love how much he cares about Daisy and how he gives Jolene a shot and some help despite her outward appearance. ( she soooo needs a shower lol). Then there is the setting! Could it be any more perfect? I just love Johnson’s world building! The book was well written and interesting! Lastly, I love how Jolene’s whole life isn’t just magically made better in one book. There was a finished ending, but not a forced Cinderella type story which made me love the book even more!

The only down side was the cozy was a bit too easy to solve. I felt like a seasoned cop and an ex lawyer should have solved the case before I did (like 40% through). But, this was literally my only complaint. Overall, great read that I finished in one day!!

Challenging.
The story hangs on a crime, a woman is murdered, and the main character joins forces with a local cop to solve it.
The best thing about the book...
she's a shifter who cannot shift because of a curse, but she can speak to animals. Like an UF Dr Doolittle.
And in the rush to solve the crime in under 200 pages, the best part of the book is all but ignored.

Somewhere between 2 and 3 Stars but it was entertaining enough so 3 Stars.

Enjoyable cosy crime about a fake pet psychic who can actually talk to animals because she is a shifter who has been stripped of her magic and ability to shift by a curse. I liked the idea, and Joelene working with te police and Peter seems like a good guy. But. -You knew it was coming didn’t you.- The whole shifters as second class citizens is not explained. There was no reason for it and it does not seem to make any sense. Will is a top surgeon and Joelene is a super successful lawyer in the magical community. Yet people find out they are shifters and suddenly they are out on their ear, one step above homeless with no prospects. I would have understood being denied opportunities due to prejudice but being completely driven from society makes no sense unless shifters are outlawed (they don’t seem to be). Or there is some big historical reason for the prejudice like shifters used to eat people or whatever. But without any of that wider context it just felt like a manufactured plot device to further stack the odds against our heroine.

This was fun read about a woman who is secretly a shifter that finds herself being a police consultant when he learns that she can speak to other animals. What follows is quite the interesting series of events and the killer may be just under their noses.

Trigger warnings: death, murder, some violence

I was nervous to read this . The start of a new series .
Erin's last series the spells and caramels series was magical. Every one if the books was pleasure to read, the characters were so likeable and had a brilliant chemistry. The bar was set high!

So this new series...
Smashed it ! I'm loving it .
The characters are just as appealing with undeniable chemistry.
Brilliant.

UPDATE:
The audio book is equally brilliant! To hear the narrator do Daisy is wonderful, and the insects and other animals too.
The budgie is the cutest thing ever! A fab audio.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’ve been waiting for Erins next series with serious anticipation since finishing Spells & Caramels. If you haven’t read Saved by the Spell yet, I suggest picking it up as it will give you some fun backstory for Officer Flint and Daisy.

I am in love with the characters in this series! It seems to be a the writing style of Erin to make all characters feel like main characters and I absolutely adore it! Give the story so much depth! I can’t wait to get more information on all of the key players.

If you’ve read her previous series, then you know that shifters aren’t well loved by the magical community and I am so thrilled that Erin choice this as the focal point for her next dive into the vast magical world she built for us.

If you love cozy mysteries, you will love all of Erins books, she takes the genre to a next level that I am so impressed with.
