Jeval was always my favorite location in this universe so it’s nice to return.

I loved being back in the Narrows. It was a good, but it felt way too short. Just as I was getting into the story, it was over. I hope this is more of a sneak peek at what’s to come. I’d be good with that.

something that occurred to me while reading fable/namesake was that the writing was (at times) very sloppy in how it forgot itself, contradicting plot points or characters' thoughts within a few chapters. i noticed that in this novella, too.

in only 74 pages, the author managed to contradict her own description of one of the main characters. when describing koy's hair, she refers to it as cut short ("since he'd shaved his long hair off") and then only a few pages later, with maybe only a day or two passing in the story, she describes it as being long ("his long, damp hair"). like i get this is just a novella but that seems like really lazy writing and a complete lack of editing?

i really love the world-building in these books and i like some of the characters (i do really like willa and koy, and wish there was a full book of them), but the quality of the writing and plot development just don't really resonate with me. i want to feel about these books how i feel about six of crows, which has a similar port city setting with a notable crew, but my "attachment" to the characters and the quality of the stories couldn't possibly compare. and yet, i read them all because i simply want pirates.

Drift is a short novella of Willa's and Koy's story. And, honestly, it feels like the start of something big.

After reading the Fable duology, I could see that Adrienne Young was not done with Koy, or else, why bring him back in the second book at all? And in this one, she brings Willa and him together, working hard to create a life at Jeval. And sure, the romance was kind of instant, and the novella doesn't allow the story to breathe and develop properly, but the ending makes it seem like the first character in a novel to come.

Nevertheless, it was nice being back at the Narrows again.

“There was part of me that needed someone to take care of. But worse than that, there was also a part that needed someone to take care of me.”

Let me start this off by saying that I was thrilled to be back in the world of the Narrows, even if for only 77 pages.

Things I loved:
⛵️ Willa - oh, how I missed her! “Not a good idea, Willa” was the theme here, and, as usual, I loved her tenacity!
⛵️ Koy - I started to feel for him in this. What he says to Willa… Ah!
⛵️Raef (Koy’s brother) - Can we get him a book?! “Hey, I tried. Didn’t I try?”
⛵️ The setting and all of the usual madness that is Jeval (hello, murder mystery)

All that being said, I’m not really sure how to rate this one. I felt like enough happened to keep me engaged, but I think I expected this to be finished, and the ending left me feeling anything but. Is it a teaser for a full-length novel to come? I sure hope so. If not, that’s a huge bummer. I think their story deserves the love of a full-length novel like what we saw with The Last Legacy. Putting it into the universe! More Willa and Koy, please!

I settled on 4 stars because I love the Narrows, I love them, and I need them back. ♥️

This book is interesting, because it opens several more potential storylines for the series, but I don't know if Young has plans to continue in this world in the future?
While this did provide some amount of satisfaction and conclusion to Willa's storyline, it honestly just made me crave more from this series and I'm not sure that it'll be coming, which makes me sad.

Great to be back in The World of the Narrows, but I feel like this could've been an epilogue in The Last Legacy.
