This is such a good poetry collection. I absolutely love Nikita Gill because her writing style is so seamless and absolutely gorgeous. This collection does have a heavy trigger warning for sexual assault and rape, depression, anxiety, domestic abuse, including partner violence and verbal abuse, and self-harm. There are a lot of very heavy topics discussed in this book, but it was just as beautiful as it was heartbreaking.
There is one particular story that is a heavy depiction of sexual assault, so definitely keep that in mind. You could tell how emotional that time was for her. I think she was either about to start high school or in high school when she was sexually assaulted, and it was someone that she knew. She had to walk by his house a lot and she threw up just about every time. She shut down, didn't talk about it, and her parents ended up sending her to a recovery center because they didn't know what was wrong. It was a heartbreakingly honest story about what happened, and my heart aches for her.
There was also a theme of mental health in general, some of the poems directly stating they are about depression and anxiety. They were super relatable to me since I am diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety. I definitely felt the way she was describing the mental illnesses. They were beautifully, yet also hauntingly, described, which I think someone might be able to relate to if you were to read those poems.
The description of the partner violence and emotional/verbal abuse was incredibly heartbreaking to read. She also talked about how that influenced the way she was with her other relationships, making it hard for her to trust people. There was also this really important section that involved why she stayed, which I think is super important and I could relate to that, especially when she started talking about her family. My sister is a victim of domestic abuse, and I think it really gave me even more perspective on what she might have gone through.
There were brief mentions of her self-harming due to the trauma of the domestic abuse and her rape, but they weren't incredibly explicit. I still would hold off on reading this until you are okay enough to read something like that and not get triggered. I would not want it to put you in a really bad mental state.
In addition to all of these incredibly heavy topics, the recurring themes throughout the collection were self-love, healing, and embracing your inner strength. She talked about how she healed herself through all of these experiences, which I think is incredibly important for a lot of people to hear. It does get better and you can survive these types of horrible, traumatic experiences.
Overall, I thought this was a really amazing collection from Nikita Gill, and I cannot wait to read whatever else she ends up releasing!

“You are made of beautiful, incredible, impossible things and your trauma does not get to trick you into believing that it is the only thing about you that matters.”
Another brilliant book by Nikita that teaches you to look inward and love & forgive yourself! But also look out at the universe to know that you matter because you are a miracle. Reminding us to learn lessons from the legends and myths that we grew up on. And understand how we can relate them to ourselves! Ugh. Brilliant.
