Dirt under fingernails, lollipops, taped knuckles, sharpie sigils, bubblegum pink, goth black, grimy, sticky-sweet perfection.

I know reviews are supposed to tell you a little about the book, a little about the strengths and weaknesses found within, but I simply can’t do that with this book.

The story of the Scapegracers is a story that might have changed the trajectory of my life if I’d been able to read it as a teenager. I’m a pretty feminine bi woman whose only long-term relationships have been straight-passing, but I still struggled with accepting my sexuality, and to this day I wrestle with my own gender nonconformity. Seeing unapologetically queer, unapologetically angry, unapologetically devoted Sideways and their femme, sweet, murderously loyal, perfectly messy coven sisters would have cracked something open inside me so much earlier. These books have reconfigured my brain, and I’m nearly 30. I didn’t have stories like this when I was a teenager. I didn’t know any fully out sapphics in high school. Sideways is a role model to me NOW; I can only imagine what she would have meant to me THEN, when I was sixteen and terrified of being found out and dying to kiss my best friend. I’m so, so happy that this story exists. I am so, so happy that today’s teenagers have a chance to know Sideways, and I hope a million people read this series so that more teenagers can find it and see themselves. Thank you, H.A. Clarke, for these books; I’ve truly never read anything like them.

I received a copy of this book as part of a goodreads giveaway

As someone who developed extreme Scapegracers brainrot after reading the first book, The Scratch Daughters made me all the more terminally ill. I am absolutely obsessed with Sideways and their girls, and the new characters introduced in this book were very endearing. This book kept me more than entertained and on the edge of my seat the whole time, and it owes a lot of its charm to Sideways being a relatable and funny narrator and main character. Live laugh love lesbian witches!

This sequel is definitely an emotional ride, everywhere from seething anger to anxious horror to the sparkliest, squishiest joy.  Once again it defies expectations and draws you inescapably in.  Tensions run hot and stakes run high and through it all you have Sideways just being relatable as hell.  Mr. Scratch's omnipresence was a delight, and the ending both provided some beautiful closure and left plenty to make you eager to pick up the last book right away.
