Not sure how to rate this, but it was a quick read and made me laugh. Picked it up off the library new books display, and I'm delighted I did.

I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. It was a fun surprise to receive this book in the mail, with its extra accompanying little treats. A special touch-it even arrived in a Halloween envelope and signed by the author! Reading this collection of irreverent poetry will distract you from the trials of life. It's clever and entertaining. Looking forward to reading the other books by this author now!

“Not Today, Satan (Maybe Tomorrow): Poems” by Andrew Shaffer is a humorous collection of poems poking fun at censorship, cats, writing and more.

The poetry, like all humor, relies on its audience’s reception. While I was lukewarm towards most of Shaffer’s jokes, his consistent tone and wit did win me over. The small illustrations also added to the style and tone of the book. “the poets strike” was the easy standout for me, playing on the very medium of poetry, though “liar” also got a real laugh from me. I can see this being a real treat to someone both versed in internet culture and writing. Also someone who owns a cat.

This is a funny little collection of poetry that doesn't take itself seriously. It's a spoof on the Amanda Lovelace style poetry, tackling such important topics as reviews, love, writing, cats, emotions, and more. I think My favorite poem is Red Flag, where there is a door to Kyle's home at the bottom of someone's heart. There are also cute line drawings for most of the poems. I also really like the adorable kittens on the cover.

Now, I must be honest, I picked this book based on the cover alone! I know that is shocking to admit, but I did it, I judged a book by the cover!

And I am so glad I did!

I have not read a poetry collection since I was in High School, I think school always put me off poetry and being stuffy and boring but this book was the total opposite. It was hilarious!

There were so many moments where I laughed out loud and some of the poems hit a bit close to home, "you are not a mermaid", for example.

I also loved the little drawings that were scattered throughout the book, they were very sweet. One of my favourite overall parts of the book was the shape of the poems. The use of calligram's occasionally in some poems was fun, this along with the drawings helped break the poems up and made me fly through the book so quickly.

Overall, this was a fun and weird read and I am so glad to have picked it.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A semi-amusing very short read.

I know this poem book is a joke, but some actually made me smirk.
Some were just not good.
I like that he likes cats. He touches base on common pop culture references. If you know you know.

I wouldn't call the humor deadpan, more silly/slapstick. I wouldn't say this humor is my kind of humor, but it may be just right for you!
2.5 Stars!

Thank you Netgalley for the few chuckles!

I was lucky enough to read this as a ARC from Netgalley. I was laughing throughout the entire book. Andrew did a great job at writing short little poems, that left me laughing. There was many that I went rushing to friends about, like hey listen to this great poem. I really recommend this to anyone wanting a light hearted funny poetry read. Before reading this I never realised poetry could also have a comedic tone, it was very refreshing
