I enjoyed the two shorter stories and while I know that everyone raves about The Hour of the Dragon; I felt that Conan did not work very well in this 77K+ format. It was my least favorite of Conan for this book and for all that I have thus far read.

Howard thinks he’s inspired by history but he’s just racist. And also a really really boring writer. Conan feels like a side character. Some cool ideas are there bur hardly ever built on. Ultimately not worth the time.

Even though I still prefer the short stories, this was still way ahead of most fantasy in terms of setting the atmosphere and the sheer scale of the world-building. I love Conan as a character anyway but there's also a grim and gritty feel to the whole world including the other characters. They all seem so real that at times you can almost see their shadowy presence looming up before you.

Fantastic grim fantasy. Can't wait to get stuck into the 3rd one now.

This collection only had three stories, one of which was hour of the dragon, the only original Conan novel. Maybe I was expecting too much but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the 1st collection of 13 short stories. Still enjoyable sword and sorcery.
