Through the story of one Nebraska family, "This Blessed Earth" shows the struggles and challenges that face today's farming families. Even though I grew up on a farm, I learned more about the agricultural industry, a huge part of Nebraska's economy and culture.
Read Harder 2019: A book by a journalist or about journalism.
I had to check out this book which has been rejected by our Governor for his proclamation for One Book One Nebraska. He hasn't read it, of course, but doesn't approve of the anti-Keystone pipeline and anti-Trump beliefs of the author.
Fortunately, this book covers much more than the hot button issues of the moment. It takes a look at the history of farming in Nebraska, the industrialization and beginnings of huge agribusiness conglomerates such as Dupont and Monsanto, and the legacy on farming and politics of the Great Depression. Some of these legacies have gone by the wayside, most likely to our future detriment. A very interesting book.
