CL's Missed Connections + comics = awesome

Bit disappointing as an anthology. The premise (illustrating Missed Connections from Craigslist) is excellent in theory, but doesn't really deliver on paper. Possibly partly due to the unremitting desperation of the Missed Connections themselves, but mostly, I think, because they're actually very difficult to turn into interesting, engaging and satisfying stories. In the end this mostly kinda dragged, which was a shame and not really the fault of anyone involved.

Each comic is done by a different artist, so there are a lot of different art styles and different takes on how to illustrate a missed connection — some are straightforward and beautifully rendered, a couple take the Craiglist ad and turn it into something super-creepy (though I suppose some of the ads are!), most are somewhere in between.

In addition to the fact that I'm nosey and something of a voyeur of craigslist, this book is really lovely because it demonstrates the art of understated storytelling.

Not connected to this book, but see also Sophie Blackall's weekly Missed Connections art blog: http://missedconnectionsny.blogspot.com/

Fun little collection of comic artists riffing on real-life personal ads. They vary in length from a page to several, some are anecdotes of the creators actual experiences relating to personals, some use the sequential art medium to give the text a whole new (generally creepy) meaning. It was fun to see the variety of approaches and illustration styles (Wertz includes artists from both the published GN community and the zine community, which is very very cool), although I did see a prevailing theme of mocking the pathetic desperation of the persons who wrote the ads. Most of these feel kinda miserable and anticlimactic, which is fitting since we don't actually know the fate of the ads in almost every case. Fun to discover new artists for to follow, although none of the stories were long enough to convert me to a new style if I didn't have an immediate aesthetic connection. If that makes any sense. It's potluck day and I have very little brain. The end.

Found out about this comic through Shaenon Garrity, who drew one of the comics for this collection. When it comes to (indie) comics, I generally enjoy these anthology-type of works. I'm still not fully familiar with all of the big 'names' so by reading anthologies, I get a sampling of the artists whose works I like and who I may eventually look up and follow when I get the time.

The book's premise is actually cute. I know I've browsed through the missed connections section of Craigslist, and made up stories in my head about what the encounter was all about. This book takes that idea and lets the various artists run with it -- some of them funny, some creepy and plain out weird, and some even melancholy.

A quick read, and will be totally appealing to the people who just enjoy reading short little stories.

Oh my hilarious! A fantastic collection of very short (1 to 3 pages) comics based on Craigslist "Missed Connections" (do they still exist, why yes they do!). Some of the comics I just didn't get, some were extremely creepy or visually unappealing, but most were a mix of sad hilarity. There were even a few sweet "awww" comics in the mix.

Single or not, if you have ever made eyes at a stranger and later wondered "what if"... or just like to laugh at those who have, this is a fantastic way to spend an hour!
