Odd. My first taste of Sagan's dabbling in self-reference and experimenting with moving the fourth wall of storytelling. The usual vibes all present and correct: eccentric upper characters, Paris as character and catalyst, fragile romance and the volatile aspects of depression and suicide. The usual astute, detached descriptions of human experience but here mixed in with overt political and personal rants, which are sometimes amusing and sometimes off-putting.
Minor: Sexism, Suicide, Colonisation, Homophobia, Classism, and Mental illness

i’ve had this book for the longest time and i don’t know where it came from. i also never particularly planned on reading it seriously like with some other books, but i always saw it as something i might pick up one day to read, you know, casually. and well it turned out to be completely up my alley. even though i hated the first 5 pages for some reason! glad i kept reading…
the writing style is amazing and I know it may not be to everyone’s taste but it sure is to mine. basically the author’s reflections on various - sometimes seemingly random but i think maybe mostly not - topics, and the story itself alternate and then they interweave and then some.
the characters as well as the author are eccentric, but while she’s very aware of it and says deep things in a simple but wordy manner, they don’t say much to each other at all and that’s why it takes a minute to figure out what it is they mean and are feeling but once you do it’s also pretty easy.
they are dramatic! and i love that… it’s just a very cool book, i don’t have the intelligence and the vocabulary to review it better.
