Of some interest as a historical artefact but it's hard to put up with this level of overt racism and really turgid gender roles in every story. I do understand that the writers had to write the (white) discourses of the times in a way that publishers would be likely to accept and pay for. So I am not seeking to "cancel" these writers but as an example of what women were writing back then I have to admit it is disappointing. Some had a touch of mischief and perhaps partially destabilised a trope but many of these also valorised roles of men, women and a colonial outlook.

I am glad we have more diverse writers and writings available these days, for all that no time is perfect.
