In the Ruins of Neoliberalism: The Rise of Antidemocratic Politics in the West by Wendy Brown
cinnakuri's review
In as much as I wanted to continue reading this book, it's just too dense and full of jargon for me to appreciate the ideas as they are. It's too hung up on theoretical concepts that it forgets how to explain to its readers what all this means for our lives.

An absolutely fantastically-written breakdown of the ideals of neoliberalism and how it gave birth to its monstrous offspring, the current lurch toward nationalist, authoritarian right regimes. Incredible clarity and argumentation.

Read for a class. Seemed like a burden. Kind of interesting but a bit too much.

Very thought provoking analysis of how we got to where we are today politically. A call for a return to meaningful democracy.

3.5 stars. While I found the earlier chapters a little dry or hard to get through, I found the later chapters captivating for all that they were bleak. Brown is really trying to elucidate how we got to the present moment, and she is doing it by linking a number of factors, from economics to our sense of where we derive morality. Ambitious, but worth thinking through, and very of the moment.
