Noemí receives a cryptic letter from her newlywed cousin that causes her to travel to her cousin and her husband’s home. There she finds her cousin “sick” and some weird shit happening all around the house. The hubby lives with the rest of his bizarre family and the only person that’s kind to her is his sweet cousin, Francis. As the happenings around the house keep getting weirder, Noemí realizes some wilder is afoot and is in a mission to get herself, her cousin and Francis way the hell away from there.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Liked
* This was a unique and well-written story. The concepts herein were extremely creative. Unlike anything I’ve ever read.
* The second half of the book went very quickly
* Francis was a sweet character, a good heart that grew from a shit family
* Noemí was a force. She was a great protagonist.

Disliked
* The first half was slow. This book took me longer to read than any other book this year. It didn’t hold my attention long enough.

3.75 Rounded up.
Mexican Gothic started with promise—my favourite spooky and gothic setting, rich with cultural detail, and a strong-willed female main character. However, as the story unfolded, the reveal of the danger lurking in the house left me feeling underwhelmed and, frankly, a bit icked out. The ending didn't quite live up to the atmospheric buildup, and I found myself wishing for a more satisfying conclusion. Despite its flaws, the novel still offers a unique take on the gothic genre and sheds light on important themes of colonialism, classism, and familial secrets. Overall, a decent read but fell short of my expectations.
