This book is only 190 pages long and yet it felt longer than the whole Twilight series and the ACTOR series combined. It was the slowest novel I've ever read and the only thing I can summarize from it is that if it had been an island of girls, they never would have resorted to killing each other. This whole book could have been avoided if there were no boys on the island and there were girls instead.

this book is not what i was expecting.

this book is disturbing. it starts out with a few innocent boys ages 4-12 who are stranded on an island, not aware of the war going on around them. as the novel progresses, the boys divide and turn into straight savages. even though the author is not a christian, this book has much biblical allusion. simon is a Christ figure. the very title lord of the flies refers to beelzebub or satan. this book highlights loss of innocence and man’s inherent evil.

this book is so heavy. i can’t help but feel bad for the boys, even jack. they have been so corrupted to the point that death does not phase them. they are desensitized to murder. i genuinely cried while reading this which is crazy because i have to read it for school. the author did a great job of displaying the horrendous things he saw during his time in world war ii and his years of teaching at an all boys boarding school. this book is a parody of sorts on coral island, showing that a bunch of boys being stranded on an island is actually the farthest thing from paradise.

i think this book is so disturbing because it would be a reality. the sweet innocent boys at the beginning turn into complete and total monsters. the author perfectly captured the built in evil of mankind. now i’m going to be sad thinking abt this book for a while.

justice for piggy and simon 🥲

I've known of this book since i was young but i never had the nerve to read it throughly until now.
I'm aware that this book is forced-fed in school (I had to read it when I was a sophmore in high school). I'd be surprised if schools still recommend this knowing of all the book bans.
Now going back to speaking of the book. This book is actually a good read, even though you may have to read in the mind of a preteen to teen. There are few scenes in which readers may feel uncomfortable, shocked, and tense (probably even get emotional). I, for one, felt all the emotions that I've listed while reading but kept on. Personally, I enjoyed the book, even though I knew what would happen. I also realized that the 1990s version of the film didn't put certain scenes from the book.

i liked this way more than i expected to! i haven’t read a classic (outside of rereads) in years so i thought the prose would give me a headache but i actually found it quite charming. it does get a little waffly at some parts but i guess cause i know it was written like a million years ago i have a higher tolerance for it.

i love the premise and i think the pacing was perfect for me. it felt a little slow in the first half (or longer im not quite sure) and then picked up fast like the calm before the storm. i do wish there was a little more development with the characters - at some points i was having a hard time figuring out who was speaking, too - but it wasn’t a massive issue with this since it still holds up quite well. it’s darker than i expected for a children’s book, but that’s what made it so hard for me to put down. the overall message was pretty bleak but i think the ending helped a lot.

Positive
This book truly shows how humans would behave if taken away from society and structure. Even with a conscious and still reasonable character the others turned to savagery.
It shows how no one is beyond the darkness of human nature, even innocent kids just "having fun"
It is a very possible world scenario and shows the hypocrisy of adults towards children. If it had been adults in the book I think it would be viewed much different. But it shows the idiocy of the behaviors adults do by illustrating them through children.
Jack sees violence and promises as a way to create his authority
Ralph sees voting and using the power he's given by the other children.
In the end they all lose their childhood innocence.

Negative
None of the characters had much development. Many characters fade into the background while only a distinct few are mentioned anymore or given a glimpse of their own personality besides Jack and Ralph.
There are things thar are very repetitively mentioned.
The color pink, the boy with a scar, SAND!
The writing was not the best and at times hard to follow, especially in the begining.
For a novel known as a classic, as a reader I should not want to edit texts.

❛They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate.” “There aren't any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves.” “The thing is – fear can't hurt you any more than a dream.❜
