Paul Muldoon packs his poetry with all sorts of references to people, places, events, and details. However, they do not add up to anything of much interest. For the most part, I get the impression that Muldoon is showing off his knowledge and vocabulary. Sometimes he is showing off his ability to structure verse in traditional forms. The result for me was tedious boredom and strain. Years ago I had a similar experience when reading, Selected poems, 1968-1986. All you Paul Muldoon fans out there, you must be more intellectual than me and have suffered greatly for your discerning taste.
