A really good coverage of the Aboriginal history of Tasmania. Fascinating to start off with, with plenty of details I didn't know about the indigenous Tasmanian populations. Upsetting later on - which you would guess - with the arrival of Europeans.

The book is accessible - it doesn't use too much academic language, and the narrative voice is relaxed enough for the reader to follow a story rather than being left to unpick names and dates and concepts. Not that it leaves any of that out, just that the details are included naturally within the delivery of a discussion or an overview - so that you don't feel the cogs of your brain churning with effort, and the desire to give up 2 pages in.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a history of Tasmania in general. Far more interesting than a Euro-centric view, and (I think) gives a more nuanced understanding of the history of all the people who now live on that beautiful island.
