Although I was skeptical for the first few chapters, I thoroughly enjoyed Fable. This book easily could have been told through multiple POV, but I enjoyed the way the author withheld information about the crew and Fable's own history and the tension it created. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel later this year.

As an aside, having a character named West captain a ship has lots of comedic potential that I hope fanfiction authors have taken advantage of.

Another wonderful adventure from this fabulous author! I’m only sad that I have to wait so long for the second book in the series to come out now. The fight scenes have that wonderful detail that I have come to love in Young’s books. Her descriptions of action sequences and scenery are so vivid. I can’t wait to read more!

This is the first book in the duology. It ends with a cliffhanger, so you want to have that second book ready. It was such a slow read. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to read the second book. This is not a typical pirate romance novel. It's more like what it really would be like in real life. Check all the trigger warnings ⚠️.  I liked the crew of the Marigold, but I wished there was more personality and character development. The plot was good, just really slow. It is told in Fable's POV. There is a romance, but it is not steamy, and it is slow to show itself.

The beauty of the covers of this duology is what drew me to it. However, the insides don’t quite match the beauty on the outside. I admit that I went into expecting beautiful writing and well developed characters that draw me in, but that wasn’t quite the case. I ended up bored and finished simply because I had already bought both rather than because I wanted to.

I really did enjoy the various nautical elements we got and thought they were mostly well done. However, everything just felt surface level and almost nonsensical at times. If the adventure and diving had taken center stage over the unbelievable romance, I think it would have been better.

That cover is still gorgeous though.

3.75

Since this was my first read in this type of book I have a 3.75 because it took me a minute to actually figure out what things were and meant In the book. But overall I did like the book and can’t wait to read the next one Namesake. Because can you say cliffhanger! 🥲

ILLEGAL CLIFFHANGER!!! HELL NO,,, but at least I was able to immediately retrieve the 2nd book from the library :) I LOVED the world of the Narrows. The pirate vibes, the diving, the trickery, the gems - it was all so cool to read about!! Fable and West BETTER work out bc that is one of my new otps!! SPOILERS BUT
THEIR UNDERWATER KISSS!??? OKAY ANNABETH AND PERCY!!???
The found family was so cute, and I hope that the 2nd book dives more deeply into their characters.  Okay, but how did Zola know that about Fable?? let's be real, I bet
that Clove is a spy for Saint...
I will say that Fable was a little naive, especially concerning Saint, but daddy issues will definitely do that to you T.T I read this in the days leading up to my Oma's memorial, so it was really nice to have a story to get lost into.
