this was super cute. i actually really enjoyed it. the definition of a light easy quick read that made me smile and laugh and also feel for the characters and their friendship and life struggles that are so inextricably linked to being a ten year old, no matter the time. this book captures perfectly the kind of close friendship of youth, particularly girlhood, and I found myself reminiscing on doing similar activities with my best friend when we were little that Mel and shell do. i liked the inclusion of sadder and more complex topics - having your parents divorce, being adopted, being aboriginal, different wealth brackets, bullying - in a way that is understandable for children to read but also very real and accurate to how children do experience these things. the characters and the way they acted with each other and the way the story unfolded was incredibly realistic and accurate. I would've liked more depth on the topic of Aboriginal people in the time of colonisation because it was touched on but there was an opportunity to expand on this and it is very important to teach and make people informed of. overall this was a lovely pleasant calming enjoyable read (side note: I read this as an ebook on libby and it told me that it took me exactly 2 hours and 11 minutes to read! i minute per page hell yeah!)
