Oy vey. This book was just as good as the first one. But it's also very different than the first one. However, the difference is not a bad thing. The writing is just as good and the plot is great. In Curse Keepers we are first introduced into the world and in Curse Breakers, we know about the world and we are seeing the consequences of the opening of the gate.

Claire and Collin are not in this book as much as the first one. I found myself missing Collin even though he's still an asshole who keeps trying to manipulate Ellie. What I love about Ellie is she has a backbone and will stand up for herself. She's doesn't let anyone push her around. She's a strong female character and I really like that.

We have a new threat in this book. Ukinim is angry at Okeus for taking his humanity. He is forced to live as a giant badger and can only appear above ground once a year. Since Okeus wants Ellie so badly, Ukinim now wants to kill Ellie and take her Manitou as revenge. About 2/3 of the way through the book, we learn why Okeus wants Ellie so badly
SpoilerHe wants to use her to create his own offspring. So basically impregnate her. He believes that since she is a Curse Keeper and a pure soul, she will have the power to create real offspring and not the current beings he created.
. It's such a plot twist and so freaking good. I was so shocked.

One of the main plot points is finding Ahone's mark so Ellie can claim herself. Ahone told her at the end of the last book that she could bear his mark but kindly didn't tell her what it was. The jerk. So now she has to go on a little quest to discover it. That's where we meet the new character, Dr. David Preston. David is an expert in Native Americans. He's also British. I love the English accent and you can tell he is British because of the words he uses. David and a team of other archaeologists are exploring the reappearance of the Lost Colony. I like David. He's a great guy who really cares about Ellie. He's a new love interest. I'm not sure how I feel about Ellie's relationship with him. I like David but I also like Collin. And it doesn't help that Collin's and Ellie's souls are bound together.

We also have the other threat from Marino. The creep is still after her and it's a sticky situation. It's about the Ricardo Estate and Collin refuses to tell Ellie anything. It's supposedly for her own safety. Well her safety is in jeopardy anyways so just tell her!

Tom, a cop and an old friend is really freaking annoying in this book. He has linked Ellie to all the weird things happening and she has to lie her way out of a lot of things. She ends up telling Tom about Marino and his guys that are after her but I got really annoyed with his constant appearances. Basically I want him to go away. I find his repeated inclusion a little too much. It's partly why I gave this 4.5 stars.

This book was great. I like the continuation of the plot but I also love the character development. We shall see what we have in store for the next book, The Curse Defiers.

I REALLY WANT THE NOOK BOOK. But it was published by Amazon and apparently they can't give it to Barnes and Noble. I guess I'll end up with the paperback. This is not a bad thing.

This book is my favorite so far in this series! Now that Ellie understands more about her role as a Keeper, the reader follows Ellie through her journey to figure out how meet the expectations of her role. This well written story added some new characters and allowed us to see deeper into Ellie's friends, family and support system. While I'm not normally drawn to books with a supernatural theme, I find myself enjoying this series.

I really, really enjoy this series! It’s an interesting fictional twist to real life history, with characters for whom you want to root, and a love triangle that will leave you going back and forth.

Likes:
+ Native American Mythology. Not many urban fantasy novels base solely on their gods, demons etc.
+ Not overwhelming. While I remembered book#1 tried to tell me too much at once, here the world building is nicely paced.
+ Even secondary characters have depth. I especially liked learning the history and motivation of demons and gods.
+ Collin really annoyed me in book #1 and all the ways how he used Ellie. So I am glad David entered the picture. And David is such a great character.

Dislikes:
- Love triangle. Especially since I can see she is going to pick the wrong guy and leave the good guy hanging in the end...
- It's weird how Ellie and David jump into bed, without foreplay or kissing. It's like there is silent attraction and then bam, penetration.

The Curse Breakers didn't suffer from second-book-in-the-series-syndrome. It developed everything nicely, added new likable characters and prepared us for the big finale. I'll even forgive the appearance of love triangle, since I think that Ellie deserved someone better than Collin.

I have been waiting for this sequel! I devoured the first one and LOVED it. It was fresh and new and filled with non-Greek/Roman mythology. It was so original, but beyond that the writing was fantastic. The characters were dynamic and the dialogue was on point.

All of this continues in book 2. We pick up right where we leave off in book 1 and it literally takes off running so prepare yourselves for a wild ride. The mystery and suspense has readers flipping the pages quickly while savoring each word. I was doing that thing again where you constantly check your progress and agonize over the fact that it's almost over.

What I loved about this sequel is that it didn't suffer from the second book curse. In The Curse Breakers, the storyline and characters progress. We even meet some new players and more secrets are revealed. I'm going to warn you Collin fans right now: as I'm sure you've inferred from the cover, another man enters the picture. This may put you off, but let me tell you something, you may find yourself as on the fence as Ellie.

By the end of this journey, we're left with more conflicted feelings, more questions, and more WTF nail-biting moments as we wait for the third installment. There's not a cliffhanger, but there's enough tease and interest peaking action to get you wanting more. A very solid series by DGS! Highly recommended!

I liked the Native American aspects of the first book, but my biggest issue with the story was the nonsense between Ellie and Collin. Both of them were immature and seemed to think dealing with their own hormones was more important than dealing with the whole curse thing. I thought book two would explore the plot a little bit more, especially because of the ending of the first book.

In The Curse Keepers, I understood Ellie’s naivety. Not only did she not believe the curse, certain events created a situation where she completely forgot any and all details about the curse. The fact that she was floundering throughout the first novel was actually believable. I just hated the way the story revolved around Collin and Ellie and the way their tension (which was semi interesting) turned into completely love and devotion so quickly.

In The Curse Breakers, Ellie is almost unbearable. She felt betrayed by Collin, but I think it’s kind of obvious that he still cared about her, was still trying to protect her, and they could probably work out their issues together maybe. Ellie cut him out of her life completely, despite knowing NOTHING at all about the curse still. She needed to know what Ahone’s mark was, she needed protection, and she couldn’t afford to waste time. But what did she do? Wasted time instead of just dealing with her emotions and putting them aside to save face with Collin.

She was literally running out of time before people she cared about and herself would be in danger and she just walked around taking her sweet time, being difficult, refusing to deal with Collin, and teaming up with other people who might be able to help her. It was maddening. I hated The Curse Breakers a little bit. Ellie was so immature and the fact that she just hopped into another relationship made me crazy. I might have felt bad because Collin was such a jerk to her in the first book, but I honestly feel like she was worse in in the second book since she didn’t have someone telling her to stop being such an idiot. I needed Collin there to at least voice my own opinions.

I also had some issues with Ellie always finding herself in dangerous situations involving rape. It’s like everyone she doesn’t know is dangerous and will attempt to rape her. And the pull of her soul towards Collin’s creates a situation where they get dangerously close even though she doesn’t want to. Even the gods want a piece of her. I’m not one of those readers who gets bothered by violence, danger, or rape, but I do kind of think it’s ridiculous how many times Ellie almost gets raped in this book. There has to be some other plot device besides rape and animal sacrifices that happen in this story.

I will read the next book because I have it, but I don’t have very high hopes. I don’t know how Ellie will redeem herself and I don’t think I’m supposed to dislike her this much. She treats everything like it’s no big deal and wants to figure it out all by herself, but she knows it’s a big deal.

CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS!!

Last year, when I wandering through NetGalley to search for any new ARC to read, I see [bc:The Curse Keepers|17894256|The Curse Keepers (Curse Keepers, #1)|Denise Grover Swank|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1371560240s/17894256.jpg|25064599]. The cover make me intrigued (because I always love a GOOD cover) and without doubt, I request it. Turn that I really enjoy it and the ending make me threat ask Ms Swank if she will write a second book. And she said, "yes" :D. So, when this early April, a mail came into my inbox and it told that I got invitation to read the next installment, I squealed in delight.

Okay, enough about me. I admit that when read the first chapter of The Curse Breaker, I kinda forget the story *hang head in shame*. Well, I read The Curse Keeper like 6 month ago, and I had read many books since then. Fortunately, it doesn't take a long time for me to catch up with Ellie Lancaster story. The story is continued from the ending of the first book, where Ellie grieved from her Daddy's death and so pissed off after Collin Dailey's betrayal. Collin is a man who is the other Curse Keeper and make Ellie's body and heart sing, so his betrayal hurt Ellie so deep.

Ellie's problem just get worse and worse when her childhood friend that happen to be a police become suspicious of her. Especially after there were so much death and murder happen in the Ellie's hometown. Add it with Collin that nowhere to seen and keep Ellie in the dark, make Ellie targeted with Okeus, a evil Croatan God that want Ellie to suffer in hell. Ellie must race with time to get Ahone's mark, so she will saved from Okeus and his evil fledgling. Lucky for her, help come in form of Dr David Preston, whose are professor of Indian Culture and Myth. Also he somehow mend Ellie's broken heart and they become close. Anyhow, so many mysteries surround Ellie, especially about her mother's dead, some antiques that make she also targeted by mafia and what the Gods, Okeus and Ahone want to do with her.

Oh, phew! Ellie seems like a busy girl, right? I almost sorry for her, because she carry too much baggage, both emotionally and physically. And I'm so pissed off toward Collin, because that man is still stubborn to not tell Ellie anything that she need to know. I know I kinda love him in first book, but in this book? Not so much.

I'm a little bit wary when see the cover of The Curse Breaker and the blurb. I'm not fans of love triangle, because the girl sometimes always choose the first man she was in love with (hello, Bella, I talk about you!). This is when I appraise Ms Swank to break the rules (kinda). She make Ellie and David's relationship to work platonically first, then escalated it into something romantic. I'm glad that the romance is not too rushed, probably because Ellie's heart still raw from what Collin did to her. What I like again is, a fact that even Collin and Ellie were tied in soul, and that Collin kinda ruined Ellie for another man, when Ellie with David, she feel like she at home. Yes, Collin make her body shattered with desire, but David offer her a home, both physical and emotional.

Thing that I see is, I love that Ellie now with David, since he's a nice guy, nerd and also charming in his own way. David is older than Collin (he's in his thirties), maybe that the reason why he's so mature and patient to Ellie. He's also British! (and ehm, I kinda imagine his voice like Benedict Cumberbatch, cough, cough!). If we see a trend in romance right now (and from many years ago), the heroine always told that she fallin for a bad boy type. Collin is rakish, he's charming and dangerous, have a shady past, even he protect Ellie with his own way, he always keep something from her. While David is more open, he do not hesitant to help Ellie, even he know he will always be number 2, compared to Collin. David is like a beta hero, but he can act as alpha, especially when it comes to Ellie's safety. He also lend his knowledge about the Croatan gods while Collin choose to hide it. I think that it's very refreshing to see Ellie choose David, because if I'm on Ellie's shoes, I will choose David over Collin. To choose a man who will make my heart feel like home.

Anyhoo, it's not that Collin become full antagonist here. He seems care to Ellie, he also admit that he fell in love with her. It just his act that make me go all "Team David!". While, near the end, what Collin do to Ellie make me stunned. And wow, I can't wait to know what happen to this triangle Ellie-David-Collin in the next book. Some scenario might happen like :
Spoiler
#1 Collin die. So Ellie will have her forever HEA with David. Yay!
#2 David die (sob!). So Ellie will have her HEA with Collin. Well, expect some drama then
#3 Both Collin and David die (on, no!). And maybe Ellie will be with Tom, a close friend of her who also the officer who suspicious of Ellie (why this one like the ending of Sookie Stackhouse series?)
#4 Ellie with have both Collin and David. Yay, menage! Yay, girl power! (okay, this will most likely not happen :|)

Put aside the romance part. The story of The Curse Breakers is fast paced and also make me frustated. But in a good way. The myth behind Croatan Gods also explored more than book #1, and we will get to know more about Ohane and Okeus, and what their plan to Ellie. Okeus himself kinda creepy, while Ohane is like "I'm holier than thou, I will not give all answer" kinda of God. What I love is how not all things seems black and white, no 100% percent evil and good. We know that Gods love to trick human, think that we are a mere plaything, and that what Ellie feel about her condition. But I see her growing, she's much much stronger now. She also believe her gut, when it comes to her heart. Her problems are plenty, yet she doesn't run and face all mystery that surround her. Told from her POV, make me can relate to her and well, it better than way rather than read 3rd POV. Even I'm intrigued to know what happen to Collin, would love to read from his POV too.

I can go on and on to tell another readers, why The Curse Breakers (and the #1 book The Curse Keepers) is a recommended read. Mix Indian myth with a kickass heroine, both heroes that will make you hard to choose to side with, suspense, mystery, and action, make The Curse Breakers as an enjoyable and satisfying read for me. And well, the cover is good too! If the publisher released the mass market paperback version, I would love to buy. Since the paperback price make me (and my wallet) cry :P.

Note: The next Curse Keepers will come out in Fall,2014. Okay, that's like 5-6 months later. I can't wait to know how the cover will be. The Curse Breaker have David standing so far from Ellie, so finger crossed that we will get he stand near her for book#3 :D (and maybe Collin too, lol!)

To me this book seemed a little slower than the first book, but with just as much anxiety as the previous book. It seemed like less action, but that is the case a lot for middle books. I still liked Ellie's character and wished for more of Collin. The love triangle really bothered me for some reason. But still...going directly onto book three!

Curse Breakers begins three short weeks after The Curse Keepers ends. Ellie is mourning the loss of her father and trying to deal with the released gods from Popogusso that are becoming stronger daily. Because of nightly visits not only to her dreams, but to her front door, Ellie decides she cannot wait any longer for Ahone's mark to fall in her lap, she seeks out a professor specializing in Native American studies to help her. After working along side Dr. Preston, Ellie realizes that although her soul might be tied to Collin's, she's definitely developing feelings for David. She just needs to protect herself from evil gods and find a way to send them back where they came from.

I realize that The Curse Keeper trilogy deals with mythologies and legends, so of course some of it will be a little out-there, but I'm feeling like it's just gotten to be a bit too much. With all of the different gods taking on their forms, there are so many freaky beings visiting Ellie that eventually I was just sitting here saying, "Really?" Badgers eating out hearts? Okay...a ginormous snake waiting for potential rapists to pick off? Hm...alright. A bird with a dude's head with billowy white hair? C'mon!

Along with that, there's this mysterious missing cache of treasures that Marino's men are after Ellie for, mistakenly believing that she has something to do with it. Then it's explained that it's been missing for 15 years...15 YEARS!? Did they just suddenly realize that this was an issue and that it's needed right this sec? Have they not taken into effect that Ellie and Collin would have been pre-teens at that point?

Additionally, this book was rather long. Clocking in at over 400 pages, it could have been way shorter if the entirety of the first book wasn't being summed up during a huge portion of this one!

Let's hope that The Curse Defiers keeps my attention and sanity a little better than this one did.
