Hahahahahaha I'm not okay.

Night's Edge: I'm a wholly original queer vampire story that will hurt your heart.
First Light: Ha, Hold my beer.

This was phenomenal. A non-stop, horror filled revenge thrill ride. This story picks up straight after the ending of 'Night's Edge' and you are thrown right back into the story.
New characters and Old are mixed together really well. The twists and revelations in this book had me wanting to hurl the book across the room (in a loving way of course).

That epilogue destroyed me I'm not going to lie. Who do I bill for therapy?

Liz Kerin has done it again. Mia is one of my favourite POV characters. Liz is now firmly an auto-buy author for me!

The ending totally got me tearing up, I loved this sequel! The modern twist on vampirism is such a cool concept and its executed beautifully. With Night’s Edge focusing on Mia’s struggle for independence and First Light continuing that journey of self discovery, it is such a fun read. Not to mention the characters being so enjoyable

I think I liked this even better than the last one! I really felt I grew to know the Sara world alongside Mia this time as the lore and world built up.
I SHRIEKED when Mia took her first daylight in the novel and I realized what that meant. I started to hope Devon wasn't a bad guy even though I knew in my gut he was a gaslighting dick. I'm glad for the some what happy ending!

I'm struggling to decide how I want to rate/review this book. I loved Night's Edge and it was undoubtedly one of the best things I read last year. I thought Liz Kerin's voice and take on vampires was unique and distinct and I appreciated the coming-of-age of it all. This novel still has Kerin's distinct voice, and I wouldn't say it's a bad book. The issue is that I didn't like it as a sequel.

I felt little to no of the same emotional complexity I was so moved by in Night's Edge. The scenes are there to set up for it but none of it really landed. Huge things happen to Mia, and she's still navigating the emotional monstrosity that comes with being a neglected/abused child turned adult, but I barely felt a thing. I didn't feel bad for her, I wasn't proud of her. I was indifferent to nearly all of the book. It felt like too many things were introduced without enough time to reflect the depth of them. Whereas Night's Edge gave me succinct and memorable plot points executed in detail.

I did like the ending, and I felt like the last two pages were reminiscent of what I saw in Night's Edge, but overall I think I would have been just as happy if Mia's story remained as the ambiguous ending in book 1.

“I came all this way to watch you burn.”

First Light is the second in the Night’s Edge duology. You’ll want to read Night’s Edge first, and then lucky you, you can dive right into this one next!

Incidentally, spoilers ahead.

It’s been nine months since Mia’s life in Tucson came crashing down around her. Her mom is gone, for good, and revenge is on her mind. She is obsessively hunting the man who infected her mother with the deadly Saratov Syndrome and ruined their lives. From a Saratov center in New York City to the wilds of frigid Colorado, Mia will encounter the harsh reality of life during a pandemic of epic proportions and pure evil at its worst. Mia will have to find new strength and perseverance, with the help of new and old friends alike. Is a happy ending even possible in a world like this?

SPOILERS OVER

There is a short list of authors whose work I will read no matter what. Liz Kerin is definitely on it; she sealed her fate with this unique and enthralling story. Mia is a character you will love to love and can’t help but root for. Her indomitable spirit leaps off the page. Kerin takes the reader on a thrilling ride through the darkest parts of humanity and still finds the light inside. Masterfully.

NOTE: I received an advance reading copy of First Light from the publisher. My opinions are my own.

Book 90 of #goodreadschallenge2024

I almost changed my mind and didn’t read this but I actually liked it better than the first one! But you definitely need to read the first one otherwise you’d be lost.
