i finished this book in 24 hours, could not put it down. thought for the first half it was definitely going to be 5 stars from me, but i’ve seen other reviews say they felt towards the end it fell a bit flat and i agree. also TW:
elder abuse, couldn’t find the right trigger warning tag.

So fun, I really enjoyed this novel. It follows Claire, a fairly textbook psychopath who enjoys murdering those who wrong her, as she makes a fresh kill in the wake of her beloved father’s death and sets off a chain of reactions that threaten to get her caught. There are several flashback chapters to when she was a little girl and much of the novel is set in a grief group. It is darkly funny and entertaining, with several surprises along the way. Claire is funny and terrible and such a fun narrator — I sped through this one in just a few days, and I’m grateful to it for getting me out of a reading slump. I would absolutely read this author again and recommend for folks looking for a dark comedy thriller!

claire doesn’t have much of a personality beyond hating everyone, and literally every other character is empty and unlikeable. the advertised (dry) humor in the book isn’t really there, either, but instead feels extremely underwhelming and is presented as the internal monologue of a clearly neurodivergent person, but i did exhale through my nose a few times, if that counts. the story was pretty unique in an american psycho/dexter kind of way with a lot of good twists, so it has that going for it.

i dunno, i had much higher hopes.

Love the way it brilliantly ties everything together by the end. Gives Joe Goldberg vibes. She's cold, insane, and hilarious.
