I really enjoyed this series start! Does the plot hinge entirely on "romance reasons"? Absolutely. Did I mind? Not at all. A fun stow-away story that's plot heavy for the first half and then character-driven in the second, with lots of push-and-pull absurdity between the main characters. I spent about 20 minutes wishing harm for the male main character, King, but recovered from that fairly quickly, and our female main character, Sophie, is delightful. There were several scenes that had me legitimately giggling (the argument over whether or not she's been shot following the mail coach incident was top tier). Excited to continue this series, because let's be honest, I'm here to get hurt in The Day of the Duchess.

Good light read! I liked Sophie’s attitude and her spark. Her sisters were extremely funny. I feel like I have read this exact plot many times before. King MMC is pretty much an unremarkable, sad and horny guy with a title. I felt annoyed by how brooding and self-pitying he was like he needs to get over himself….But, overall I enjoyed and will keep reading the series.

Honestly captivating. I didn’t love the ending feud—it’s quite annoying when the heroine tries to be honest and the hero refuses it…just to hear the same words from someone else (typically someone male) and realize his mistake. How about believing the girl you supposedly love instead of playing through this charade?!

Beyond that, it was a great deal of fun! Sophie was so headstrong and brave and I loved her refusals to back down for proprieties sake. And Sesily was phenomenal. I love seeing her prior to Bombshell. She’s magnificent.

After re-reading: OMG this held up so well if not even better upon re-reading. The TENSION. Chef’s kiss. I enjoyed this so much and cried actual tears towards the end. So worth it.
Original review: 5⭐️ This was pretty intense enemies to lovers, which usually I have a hard time with. BUT the chemistry between King and Sophie is amazing. The story is so good, and I absolutely loved Sophie’s character. An incredible read.

As someone who doesn't read a lot of regency or enemies-to-lovers romances this was a different kinda read than what I'm used to. MacLean's writing was surprisingly funny and kept me engaged with both of the love interests in a way I never expected! Justine Eyre's reading was also top notch! I liked this a lot more than I expected to.

I have read a lot of angry reviews that felt King, the male LI, was a complete jerk but I didn't personally feel that way. I felt like his reasoning for why he acted like a jerk was really grounded and made sense for his character. Would I have stuck around long enough to fall in love? Probably not, but I'm glad Sophie did as I genuinely love them together!

If the latter half of this book had continued to be as exciting as the first, this might have been one of my all time favorites. The banter between Sophie and King is top notch, she's not afraid to do her own thing and/or give him a piece of her mind in the process and the angst factor was pretty good. However, once we get to our destination at about the 70% mark or so, the rest of the story just drags and takes some really frustrating turns. Absolutely bonkers premise though, just a tedious finish.
