Reverie

Hated the characters (rude and annoying).

An honestly fun book. At times the tone can start too feel a bit too doom and gloom, but it always feels intentional. It starts pretty slow but once it gets going it doesn't really falter. All the mysteries are interesting although looking back im not sure how well you could predict all of them based on the info you have by that point.

My only real complaint is a bit of overuse of proper nouns in the early parts of the book. I specifically remember a scene where it felt like Ursula said Reverie maybe five times across like two sentences.

Overall worth the read in my opinion. But if you don't vibe with it I think you'll know pretty early.

As soon as I started this book I knew that it will be one of the good ones. I love stories that start kind of in the middle. I often imagine what would the filling of the plot be in a TV show if it would start in one of the episodes. That’s kind of one of my quirks.

And this story starts exactly in that way. We meet a teenage boy who just had a traumatic experience and now he doesn’t remember what led to it or half of his life for that matter.
Throw into it few slightly weird people, some mystical worlds and magical powers; and you have a very interesting book to read.

Speaking of powers. I was a little surprised when supernatural was introduced, twice. I knew there was magic in this world but the writer managed hide it well under the mundane and the whip it out when I expected it the least the first two times it happened. Well done.

I actually really liked how magic worked in this book. It wasn’t all explained but knowing everything about magic in the story is not always the most important thing, sometimes is for it to feel natural, like something that could actually be real. I also appreciated the use of colours, it helped paint a really aesthetically pleasing image in my head while reading, kind of inspired in anime and that’s always a good thing in my head. In general the writing style made it very easy to imagine the scenes.

The only small complaint is that, as a person who normally loves character driven stories, I would like to have the characters’ personalities a little more developed, beyond the few surface characteristics. Don’t get me wrong, all of them are likeable, even the villain, but we just don’t know much about them.

Despite that I really enjoyed this book. The story is good, characters likeable, writing easy to read without being over simplistic and the romance subplot not too overwhelming.
I will definitely pick up another book by the same author.

A completely mental and ethereal masterpiece. The writing in Reverie is SO beautiful and engaging, and I absolutely adored the characters—they are so powerful and unique, and I spent the entire book wondering who was truly a good guy or a bad guy.

I listened to the audiobook as part of the Big Library Read, and while it was a great narration, it’s probably not the format I’d recommend—I think I would have enjoyed it more if I could flip back and reread parts here and there. I’ll probably pick up the book itself soon and give it another go!

I wanted to love it, but it took so long to get to know the main character and understand the relationships

The books cover is absolutely beautiful and I really enjoyed this fantasy book. I love the premises of the reveries. “"Reveries are what happens when a person’s imagined world becomes real. They’re like miniature realities, with their own plots and rules and perils.” This book is full of twists and turns especially when the reveries rules aren’t followed that kept me wondering what was going to happen as they changed. All the different worlds were so intricate and creative! Its a bit of a chaotic storyline, but it kept me thoroughly engaged trying to figure out Kane’s missing memories and how the others friendship was!
