I really love the artwork of this Manga adaptation. I love seeing all the characters and their outfits. But the manga is quite an accurate adaptation of the actual novel. There are scenes, and one of which is my favorite, which have been altered. But other than that, I enjoyed this book. I read this in one sitting. A perfect way to reread The Clique if you want a fast read.

I couldn't sleep last night and saw this on KU—thought it would be fun to re-visit a childhood favorite.

The illustrations are beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing one of my favorite books of my Jr. High years unfold on the page. The issue was, as many other readers have pointed out, that divorcing this story from Harrison's satirical voice and from the mean girls' insecurities highlighted in the book makes this feel like a cruel story inappropriate for Middle Grade readers

Manga adaptation, volume one.

Massie is a spoiled rich girl who suddenly has to deal with a new classmate who works for her dad and lives in her parents' guesthouse. Catty girls and lots of product placement.

This book doesn't cover any new ground, the characters function merely as rudimentary types, and the plot was thin. So why did I read all of it? First of all, Yishan Li's art was delightful. Even though the girls were often drawn far too sexy for any seventh graders I've ever seen, there was a crisp, cleanness to Li's line. She has an excellent command of the human form and an impressive ability with screen tone. I'd like to see more of her work. Lastly, I can't compare to the original since I haven't read it, but despite the thin plot of the graphic novel, its world seemed convincing. I suspect this is due to the skill of Li's art, though Harrison should be given full credit for the framework that Li built upon.

Overall, a good read, but not a great one.

I like The Clique and its movie, but this adaptation didn't bring anything new to the table, and thus was rather boring if you're already familiar with the story.

Also, why is Dylan drawn so skinny? Being plus-sized is a big part of her character arch. It's not enough to just have a skinny girl who eats snacks a lot. If I didn't already know her character, I would have been confused. I get the feeling that this choice was made so the art would have a more appealing aesthetic, and if so, it's a shame our society can't see beauty in more than one size.

There's really no real plot to this book. I slightly enjoyed it and it took less than an hour to read so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I just have absolutely no sympathy for the characters. I may read the next book in the series just for the heck of it.
