It's a bit geeky about primitive chemistry and alchemy, I enjoyed these bits but I also own older science books like [b:Procedures in Experimental Physics|5870004|Procedures in Experimental Physics|John Strong|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1392124615s/5870004.jpg|6042173], if your not a science nerd you may want to skip this as there's not much action or plot and it falls apart a bit at the end. The snake-oil aspects are a funny shtick as well as the whole pre-experimental natural philosophy versus modern science. A good first novel for both its authors.

Can be read as a standalone, other than the basic series premise there's no other plot lines you have to know.

Not the best book in this collective of books and authors. Some good ideas bu5 the main character comes of mostly as a lucky jerk with a very tepid personality. The side stories are the best and most interesting.
Sooo another one with a great idea but unsuccessful execution...
